Introduction

Situational Analysis

Networking is an essential part of everyday computing, in the office or at home, PC;s located at a single establishment need to be networked to increase productivity regarding time management, information sharing, resource sharing and even for recreation. Personal Computers Today including Laptops are readily made to have Networking capability. In the Hardware part, Motherboards are readily equipped with a built-in Network Interface Card (NIC) to instantly support networking. And in the software part, Operating Systems are bundled to support minimal configuration networking utilities such as DHCP host. /asia/ph.htm. With this advancement in communication the Filipino people has discovered a new necessity in their everyday life and that is connecting to the internet. But this does not literally mean that a single computer has to have a separate connection for receive and transmission of information likes all those other types of communication media such as the telephone, in the internet age networking is the key for maximization of costs with regards to information sharing and global connectivity. Today although many technological solutions are available to in the market to enable interconnectivity such as Routers, Hubs, Switches and even a combo of the latter a much needed technical knowledge had to acquired beforehand to be able to operate these technologies such as knowledge on certain Internet Protocols and Networking Standards. Therefore for an average end-user to be able to operate these machines he or she has to have a certain inclination or background to implement a successful computer network. But the world of computing is overwhelming with possibilities and it is only up to the users innovation on how to manipulate the technology for his or her advantage. One possible solution to this problem is to create a alternative technology in which it takes advantage of the readily available resources found on generic personal computers today such as the built-in network card and the DHCP host inside a windows operating system. The device is simply an electronic relay mechanism made with cheaply obtained generic parts from an electronic shop. The circuit just simply senses a host if it is on-line and if it is then it does nothing but if for some reason the host is off-line then it triggers a bridge and gets its connection directly bypassing the off-line host. With this simple technology a user can now do a small computer network even without the aid of a switch and a router.

Significance of the Project

The need for a cost-effective and easy to use networking solution
Internet technology is a basic home and office necessity, but the common Filipino establishment still has a hard time coping –up with the overhead of expense it creates. Despite the fact that the resource is highly shareable across establishments there is a requirement for a special knowledge and skill in networking to achieve it. Which a common end-user without IT background might not have.

• Conduct a quantitative study to the users of the state of the art of the technology regarding technical knowledge requirements, resource maximization and justifiable expenses.
• Data to produce the information is to be gathered from three strategic respondents namely the academe, home and sme’s exposed to internet technology.

The Search for a closely related reading that i could use as a support for my research proposal seemed impossible for me. i've spent hours to look for information that backs-up my arguments for realizing the technology i'm proposing in fact i'm losing hope that i could find a decent reading. But nevertheless i tried to stress out my personal standpoint in this preliminary post of what i have in mind.

I think maybe the reason is that im trying to make a technology which is considerably obsolete and more of a backward technology with the existence of its more advanced counterparts.

But the inspiration of what im trying to pursue is to make an alternative in which i could prove that a less sophisticated device is needed on the lower levels of our community such as homes, home offices and sme's lacking the IT background to implement a successful networking infrastructure.

UPDATE 1: Electronic Connectivity Switch

Objectives

Devise an Electronic Connectivity Switch (ECS) that would handle the connectivity of wired networked computers.

* Identify the electronic components needed.
* Identify sources of electronic components.
* Identify the usage and operation of the needed electronic components.
* Design a schematic circuit diagram.

Methodology

The methodology will be composed of the strategic location for the construction of the device that promotes availability of the tools needed for the construction as well as having the needed equipment to properly test the Electronic Connectivity Switch (ECS) before releasing a prototype. Secondly is the Electronic design of the device, considering that it should be built entirely of components that are readily accessible at any electronic parts shop. Lastly is the Hardware Construction of the ECS which will be the external built which be made of hazard free components as well as promoting a HUB/SWITCH like look and feel.


Location

The site will be located at the researcher’s workplace which is an enclosed environment with enough space to work on and where the tools needed for such construction of the Electronic Connectivity Switch are available. Also the site caters at least to computer systems that is valuable for the use of testing the device prior to releasing its working prototype.


Electronic Design

The electronic design of the Electronic Connectivity Switch will be carefully put in concept with regards to the availability and affordability of materials to promote serviceability and basic electronic construction.


Hardware Construction

The Electronic Connectivity Switch’s electronic components will be enclosed on a hard plastic material to prevent users from electronic shock, since the device will be fixed in with its own power transformer. Air holes will be punched to the enclosure to prevent overheating and malfunction with too much heat.

In America alone the Internet user are about 26.5% of the total users of the internet in the world. The availability of internet service in the Philippines had been doubling in such short time as 1-year from 2005-2006 according to Philippines stats (2008) . With this advancement in communication the Filipino people has discovered a new necessity in their everyday life and that is connecting to the internet. But this does not literally mean that a single computer has to have a separate connection for receiving and transmission of information like all those other types of communication media such as the telephone, in the internet age networking is the key for maximization of costs with regards to information sharing and global connectivity. Here in Davao as a freelance Computer technician doing those kind of jobs for home and SME’s which do not know how to operate their machines, I see a pertaining problem and one possible solution to this problem is to create an alternative technology in which it takes advantage of the readily available resources found on generic personal computers today such as the built-in network card and the DHCP host inside a windows operating system. The device is simply an electronic relay mechanism made with cheaply obtained generic parts from an electronic shop. With this simple technology a user can now do a small computer network even without the aid of a switch and a router. Now would be the best time for this technology to exist since our country’s IT skills is just beginning to cope up with the fast phase change in the worlds IT industry and with a global crisis I think we need sustainable technologies just to lessen the overhead expenses. The realization of this device is moved by the facts that the average household or office might not have the technical skills to handle existing networking devices sold on the market and most of all might not have the capacity to buy these items since they cost rather expensive. Urgency however is in demand to produce this technology since internet connectivity in local places are within the limits of the wired networking capabilities therefore maximizing one internet subscription within the range of 100m for multiple users would greatly reduce overhead expenses in households and small offices. The technology might seem backward but the thought that the end-users having been delimited by complicated networking technology that hinders them to take networking advancement that shows the overall solution of this product which is easy to use without any IT background timely. Significance this technology is that it will be practical solution to those households and offices that aim to maximize the use of a single internet connection for multiple users that indeed does not have the technical knowledge to handle networking hardware and that maybe cannot handle to purchase these expensive equipment. Also there is a factor of this device that proves its sustainability simply because of its basic design as well as its hardware components being readily available on local electronics vendors.

Logic Gates

A logic gate performs a logical operation on one or more logic inputs and produces a single logic output. Because the output is also a logic-level value, an output of one logic gate can connect to the input of one or more other logic gates. The logic normally performed is Boolean logic and is most commonly found in digital circuits. Logic gates are primarily implemented electronically using diodes or transistors, but can also be constructed using electromagnetic relays, fluidics, optics, molecules, or even mechanical elements. In electronic logic, a logic level is represented by a voltage or current, (which depends on the type of electronic logic in use). In logic circuit diagrams the power is not shown, but in a full electronic schematic, power connections are required.

Diode Logic (DL)

Diode logic gates use diodes to perform AND and OR logic functions. Diodes have the property of easily passing an electrical current in one direction, but not the other. Thus, diodes can act as a logical switch.
Diode logic gates are very simple and inexpensive, and can be used effectively in specific situations. However, they cannot be used extensively, as they tend to degrade digital signals rapidly. In addition, they cannot perform a NOT function, so their usefulness is quite limited .

Resistor-Transistor Logic (RTL)

Resistor-transistor logic gates use Transistors to combine multiple input signals, which also amplify and invert the resulting combined signal. Often an additional transistor is included to re-invert the output signal. This combination provides clean output signals and either inversion or non-inversion as needed. RTL gates are almost as simple as DL gates, and remain inexpensive. They also are handy because both normal and inverted signals are often available. However, they do draw a significant amount of current from the power supply for each gate. Another limitation is that RTL gates cannot switch at the high speeds used by today's computers, although they are still useful in slower applications. Although they are not designed for linear operation, RTL integrated circuits are sometimes used as inexpensive small-signal amplifiers, or as interface devices between linear and digital circuits .

Diode-Transistor Logic (DTL)

By letting diodes perform the logical AND or OR function and then amplifying the result with a transistor, we can avoid some of the limitations of RTL. DTL takes diode logic gates and adds a transistor to the output, in order to provide logic inversion and to restore the signal to full logic levels .

Transistor-Transistor Logic (TTL)

The physical construction of integrated circuits made it more effective to replace all the input diodes in a DTL gate with a transistor, built with multiple emitters. The result is transistor-transistor logic, which became the standard logic circuit in most applications for a number of years. As the state of the art improved, TTL integrated circuits were adapted slightly to handle a wider range of requirements, but their basic functions remained the same. These devices comprise the 7400 family of digital ICs .

Emitter-Coupled Logic (ECL)

Also known as Current Mode Logic (CML), ECL gates are specifically designed to operate at extremely high speeds, by avoiding the "lag" inherent when transistors are allowed to become saturated. Because of this, however, these gates demand substantial amounts of electrical current to operate correctly .

CMOS Logic
One factor is common to all of the logic families we have listed above: they use significant amounts of electrical power. Many applications, especially portable, battery-powered ones, require that the use of power be absolutely minimized. To accomplish this, the CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) logic family was developed. This family uses enhancement-mode MOSFETs as its transistors, and is so designed that it requires almost no current to operate.
CMOS gates are, however, severely limited in their speed of operation. Nevertheless, they are highly useful and effective in a wide range of battery-powered applications .
The proposed Electronic Connectivity Switch (ECS) was conceptualized due to the factors that demand for an alternative electronic device for the modern day routers and router/switch combo that are popular in today’s networking solutions. Taken in consideration that more internet and networking users are not equipped with the technical skills to handle routers/switches, the ECS would then be designed for zero configuration and ease of use. The development of the ECS will be based on cheap and readily accessible logical components found on any electronics store which would then give the device an edge on the pre made counterparts simply because of its serviceability and basic construction.

Expected Outputs

After the data gathering procedures, whether it will be proven or not that there is a need for an alternative electronic device. The researcher will be due to construct a working prototype of the proposed ECS. The ECS will then be distributed to the respondents that would be willing to test the ECS in its practical application. The ECS is expected to give the greatest factor of whatever is the outcome of the data gathering and interpretations. The ECS will show the researcher on whether to accept or reject the information that was produced by interpreting the data. There are only two general issues that will be the basis of this study. That is, whether there is a need for an alternative electronic device in replacement for the modern day switch/router or that there is no need for it. Basing on the fact that the data interpretations tell it and that the produced hardware does not improve the efficiency of the networking experience of the respondents in any ways determined. However, if the ECS does prove to be worthy to improve the efficiency of the respondents networking experience. The researcher wishes to endorse whatever is the new knowledge produced by this study to be enhanced by parties that are interested and be part of a much larger project of developing the new product.
