PostSubject: be eMPloyed in an IS enviroment   Thu Sep 25, 2008 6:01 pm

This is the information age of the digital society. A sudden explosion of emails, chat, blogs, IM's from ubiquitous computer screens can be seen just about anywhere. Due to the fast development of technology these days certain enigmas puzzled the community and as a solution few information environments are formed to bring answers and to further plow the information field.

An information systems environment is an area in which information systems professionals apply management systems and technology skills professionally in an organization. An environment does not and cannot constitute a single, focused knowledge area such as applications in mathematics, art, technology, law, statistics, or desktop publishing. Instead, an environment represents an ecosystem in which information systems are employed. The environment surrounds and impacts the systems and technologies that support it and whose inputs, processes or outputs are closely intertwined with their information system.

An aspiring IT professional, like myself surely sees himself/herself to be one day be in the “inner circle of technology”, to be a part of a prestigious IT environment or organization in which he/she can show his/her full potential. But through that journey a lot of problems arise.

Once I tried to imagine to be an IT professional seeking an avenue where I can utilize all the information I acquired in all the years that I have studied in the university and seeking an opportunity to further explore the depths of information technology. To put it plainly, I am looking for a job suitable for the degree that I have earned. But the first problem one would encounter, isn't unemployment but choosing what IS environment would fit me best. There is a great number of IS environment that exist in today's corporate world and frankly, I am torn between being in the business process sector and E-business sector.

Since both sectors have been used interchangeably, a differentiation between the two must be stated first. E-business is defined as the transaction of business by way of electronic media, such as telephones, fax machines, computers, and video-teleconferencing equipment. It is a business strategy for companies using the Internet to trade. It also concerns of International or general accounting and finance, web management, e-marketing, the psychology of interface design, logistics and supply chain management. Technology core, advanced technologies related to web, for example, e-commerce applications, client-server, advanced networking, servlet technology, etc. Whereas, when one calls for a business process sector it mainly concerns with human resources management, accounting, marketing, finance, operations management, and other processes that integrate the areas specified above. It consists of management information systems including core technologies plus advanced systems and technologies with management and/or business applications.

Therefore, E-business sectors is a community that executes advance IT/capabilities, and having such capabilities as the main service it offers its clients, while business processes deals with automating a company for it to be more efficient, and globally competitive.

A company like Davao Light and Power Corporation functions like both E-business and plain business sector, so let's try to think that the said company is the one I get to work into after studying (hopefully). Why did I say that it functions like both an E-business and plain business sector? Well, Davao Light and Power Company is the third largest privately-owned electric utility in the Philippines. It holds the franchise for distributing electric power to Davao City; it makes use of a fully functional automated mapping and facilities management (AM/FM) system to track the location of electric distribution assets in its franchise. Also in place is a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, a facility that allows remote real-time data gathering and control of equipment in all power substations. High-end computers, sophisticated software, and other devices are being used to speed up meter reading, streamline billing, provide efficient and prompt response to customer inquiries, generate management information, and analyze electrical grid information.

It would be a pleasure to work in DLPC, even if I just get accepted as a customer service representative or a cashier in that office would be a delight but I'd rather consider on gaining a job that would suit my expertise. So, I think I would like to work in their Information Systems Group.

The Information Systems Department in the Davao Light and Power Corporation is divided into four sectors: the Business Solutions Department or the BSD, the Engineering Information Department or the EID, the Network Infrastructure Department or the NID and the Database Management Department or the DMD.

All of these four sectors are under the Information Systems Group umbrella, and another related department exists namely the Geographical Information Systems Department or the GIS sector. Its hard to choose amongst these five IS departments because all of them have different yet important tasks to do.

The EID or the Engineering Information Department creates solutions to the business problems or queries presented to the Davao Light and Power Corporation but I think amongst the five departments its the least likely sector that I would choose to work for. Why? Well, the answer is quite simple and quite obvious actually, its because it handles creating solutions for the company in an engineering kind of perspective. They are more on concerned with hardware and structure of the company's infrastructure. I reckon that mostly ECE graduates will be more effective in this department than an IT graduate like me.

Next department for consideration would be the NID or the Network Infrastructure Department which handles the company's IT/Network infrastructure. It maybe true that I have a studied a bit about networks but not enough to be a qualified member. An advantage in working for this department is that I may learn more about networks and thus, be a more competitive IT professional. But then again, I may affect the teams performance due to my inexperience in dealing with the network infrastructures.

The GIS or the Geographical Information System is a separate division from the sectors in the Information Systems Group umbrella. But its quite interesting because it deals with managing systems that functions as a tracking unit of a caller. This division is made especially to aid the Davao City 911 emergency division. Isn't it nice to earn money, do the job that you are good at and help people at the same time.? It would bring a certain fulfillment to the person who is involve in this doing.

Now the last two departments: the Business Solutions Department, which deals with creating business solutions to the company such as creating new systems for the company's use only and aims to make the company be more progressive and the Database Management Department that by their name itself, explains that they are the ones who manages and updates the databases made in-house and sometimes outsourced by the company. These two Information Systems Group sectors are my main choices, and its kind of hard to decide which one is best. Either of the two departments would be perfect for me because I would be either developing or managing a database or a system.

So now that I have selected a role in a particular information environment, another problem arise, and that is how to adapt into this information environment. Questions such as does the principles in principles of information organization and representation can help me through this task fill my head.

The notion of information representation and organization traditionally means creating catalogs and indexes for publications of any kind. It includes the description of the attributes of a document and the representation of its intellectual content. Today the library catalog is no longer a tool for its own collection for the library visitors; it has become a network node that users can visit from anywhere in the world via a computer connected to the Web information space that is being used for e-publishing, e-businesses, and e-commerce.

There are three principles of knowledge organization that I have known of. First is that, knowledge needs to be organized for communities. Second is that, in designing tools to support the organization of knowledge, guiding principle must be that of user orientation and predominant usage. And lastly, standardization and networking provide infrastructures, which facilitate effective and efficient access to information and documents.

The first principle expresses the needs of the community for information, documents, education and recreation are established through user studies, service delivery, committees ('focus groups'), involvement with stake holders in the community and other interactions with the community. While the second principle focuses in the design of front-end in terms of the search and browse interface, display options should be in tune with our understanding of the target community. Whereas the last principle tells us that one should demonstrate the sharing of expertise and perspectives in relation to the organization of knowledge. If one wants to associate these principles into just a few words, they can use communities, user orientation and standardization and networking, respectively.

One might ask how identifying such principles can help me to do my job, and my answer would be that it would be an advantage to be terms with such principles for it enables me to identify how can I execute my job properly, who will be affected by my decisions, how can I represent myself and my job and the information that I have at the moment. My job becomes a lot easier and faster. By identifying and being familiar with such rules or principles I hope to make them part of my habit in working to make me more progressive.

The challenges that I might encounter is inexperience. By definition, inexperience is lack of the knowledge gained from experience. Imagine this situation when you know you can do the job. You are itching to get an interview. You'd love to send a resume or curriculum vitae to the prospective employer. But there is a looming concern you have no experience. Believe it or not, people have gotten employment even when their experience appears to be lacking at first glance. Let's say that I have “the” potential that's why they hired me but when one gets into the real, competitive information system environment, one gets hit by the realization that one still needs more information and experience to do a job.

How can one cope up with this problem? The solution is just simple. Keep on reading and don't lose your focus. One shouldn't be afraid to ask for assistance to his/her colleague. One should keep in mind that you are gaining experience now and of course, you have to be realistic. If you honestly have no relevant experiences, you may have to accept a different position in a similar field or wait until you have more expertise to move. Always think that they wouldn't hire you if they don't believe that you can do the jod and be an asset for the company.

For instance, if you're just out of school, you probably won't land a managerial position; however, if you take on a job with a progressive company and show your bosses that you are determined and responsible, you may be given plenty of opportunities to get some supervisory experience under your belt. Then, when internal or external job opportunities arise, you'll have the credentials in black and white on your CV.
Above all else, it's important to remember that no one is born with job experience. Over time, we all develop career skills; therefore, never allow a lack of knowledge to stop you from traveling on your desired occupation path. It might take some creative CV "tweaking" on your part, but if you can show a prospective employer you have the basic skill needed to perform at a superior level, you just may find yourself in a new job.

As a summary, in deciding in what information systems environment to be in one must consider his/her limitations, qualities and which jobs would suit him/her best so that he/she can unleash his/her full potential at work. By doing this one could lessen inefficiency in his/her own work performance even if one is inexperienced. One should also remain positive and keep on reading and studying for the only way to be successful in a certain field is to be always up to date with the latest advancements of technology.

lol!

At first, I thought that we are supposed to identify a information environment team for this assignment. But after asking Sir about the assignment, it made me realize that it was just all about the information systems of a given institution. But actually, reminding about that topic makes takes me long enough to understand.

So remembering the lessons we had in MIS, specifically about IS. Information Systems sometimes refers to a systems of person, data records and activities that process the data and information in an organization, and it includes the organization's manual and automated processes. About MIS, it's merely managing a systems of people. But more likely, it is not natural to manage people, but it is more nice to hear about leadership. The difference between the two is managing, means controlling, handling and directing. If people are being manage, it means that the manager is only controlling them and it's up to the people below level to do the task. Unlike, leadership. It only means that he or she is just the leader for the task being thrown to the group. For this topic, it is better to lead than to manage because we are talking about an information environment which deals to the surrounding.

Information environment might be a company or organization. Now a days, big companies such as DLPC or the Davao Light and Power Corporation involves with information systems. Thus it is a big help for their daily routine which brings the company in great ease. In that case, DLPC or the Davao Light and Power Corporation is one of the member of the information environment. Information as a concept has a diversity of meanings, from everyday usage to technical settings. Generally speaking, the concept of information is closely related to notions of constraint, communication, control data, form, instruction, knowledge, meaning, mental stimulus, pattern, perception, and representation. Information is also an any type of pattern that influences the formation or transformation of other patterns. Environment means about a surroundings. It may either be a group of people surrounding you, or a surroundings of a thing. Or in other words, information environment is a surrounding of communication, control data, form, instruction, knowledge, meaning, patterns around a specified company which influences the transformation of the said company. And an information environment simply means that it is an environment for which the people inside the environment can interact with the environment outside their environment.

If I were to choose an Information Environment, I'd rather choose my adopted company in this subject Management Information Systems or MIS. And as I mentioned above, it is the Davao Light and Power Company. Davao Light and Power Company is the third largest privately-owned electric utility in the Philippines. It holds the franchise for distributing electric power to Davao City, the largest city in the world in terms of land area, as well as Panabo City and the municipalities of Carmen, Dujali, and Sto. Tomas in Davao del Norte. Davao Light & Power Company, Inc. (DLPC) was incorporated in 1929 by P.H. Frank, Relatives and Associates. Negotiations for the purchase of DLPC by the Aboitiz Group was seriously undertaken in late 1941 but was subsequently aborted due to the outbreak of World War II. Early in the 1950s, much of Davao City’s economy relied on agriculture and the only major use of electricity was for lighting up houses at night. Hence, DLPC pursued an aggressive marketing and production strategy by opening a Davao agency for Aboitiz & Company whose sole purpose was to sell various electrical equipment in order to introduce electrical usage to the populace. Results were an increase in peak capacity from 1,500 kW in 1952 to 26,500 kW in 1970. Execution of improved methods of production such as the acquisition of bigger engines and heavy fuel translated into savings for its 10,000 plus consumers. In 1963, it was the first utility in the Philippines to use Bunker Fuel on Diesel Engines. The technical expertise of DLPC’s key personnel brought the company to the forefront of the development of mini hydroelectric generating plants. From diesel-fed generating sets in the beginning, the utility switched to more economical heavy fuels. It operated mini hydros but later on hooked up with the Mindanao Grid of the National Power Corporation (NPC) in 1979 making it an exclusive distributor of electricity as it is today. So as said by their profile and history, now, this company serves as the big institution that distributes electric power in our own houses. So as big company as the DLPC, it is more profound that it is an Information environment company.

Davao Light and Power Company Incorporated has its own Information Systems Department on which it is divided into 4 departments. The BSD or the Business Solutions Department, the NID or the Network and Infrastructure Department, the DMD or the Database Management Department, and the EID or the Engineering Information Department. They also included the 911 systems on which the Davao Light and Power Company Incorporated handles, the GIS or the Geographical Information Systems. So if I were given a chance to be a part of this information environment, I would rather be on the Business Solution Department or the BSD. For that in case I will perform much appropriate jobs and works for the company. Business Solutions Department or the BSD provides solutions to the problems that are being given by the clients. They provide the sufficient solution to that said problem in order for the client to be satisfied. So able to provide help for the department or the company, my role for this environment is to become a researcher and a programmer as well. Business Solutions Department or the BSD members are mostly programmers and researchers as well. But they are only limited on searching to the problems stated, meaning if I were be able to become the researcher of the department, I'd rather be an outfield researcher. Outfield researcher takes the place of like an survey people. They interacts with the surrounding and get some information on behalf of the problems they have encountered. More likely, it is easier for the department to solve the problems. Relatively, BSD does not only provides solutions for their client but also for the company as well. But for me, members of the said department can handle the problem within the company. Since they are really interacting the problems inside. Me, I want to handle the problems of the client in order for the said company to be more reliable.

The principle of Information Organization and its representation includes the communities, user orientation, and standardization and networking devices. In the communities, there are also principles that must be cater. First is the knowledge needs to be organized for communities. It simply means that
the one who is involved in the organization must first cater the needs of the community. So in my role, the first principle deals with what I want to contribute to the company. That it the people or the client of the organization must be taken of first. Next principle about the community is in designing tools to support the organization of knowledge, guiding principle must be that of user orientation and predominant usage. So meaning that the organization must first create a user friendly environment for their clients. They must create tools or design appropriate things in order for the organization's knowledge may be supported accordingly. And last standard is that the standardization and networking provide infrastructures, which facilitate effective and efficient access to information and documents that can be a help for the client as well. So the next principle in information organization is the user- orientation. In user-orientation, it is somewhat training for the user, either a part of the organization or the client of the organization. Meaning, being a researcher as my role for the organization, I'm required to be oriented properly so that if it is my turn to interact with people, I can orient them in the way that I was being oriented or more likely I can orient them more in the way I was oriented. For that the people I'm interacting with can understand the what will I'm about to do. And the last principle of the information organization is the standardization and networking. It simply means that the organization must be standardize in order for the organization to work properly. In terms of networking, it must be done regularly to solve the issues that being thrown by the clients. In more prominent words, these principles is a great help for me as a researcher as my role to the company. I must first think about what would it the client's reaction and formulate a solution for the clients problem. Then, the user must be properly accommodated so that there are no unlike words for your performance. And lastly, the organization must be working hand-in-hand for the solution. In other words, being part of the organization, its my obligation to work handily with the people around me so that I can perform a better performance for the organization and to satisfy the client's needs.

To perform my role in this information environment, it is not impossible for me to encounter problems and trials. I may face some challenges for it. Challenge is an invitation to engage in a fight or a duel. More likely, I may be into a fight for this role I'm in. In facing problems or challenges does makes the person stronger and makes the person aims to win the fight. Being an outside researcher, one challenge that I will face is how to interact with the people I'm in. It's kinda scary for me to ask questions or even to mingle with those people who throws situations for the organization. It is also a challenge for me to let them listen to what will be the probable answers to the problem. One thing also, as a researcher, it is also a challenge for me to answers the problems. More likely, its a mind game for that case. Joke. So its a mind trick challenge also on how to solve and address the problems. For the first challenge I will face, one thing to solve the problem is to let the public know my purpose for asking some questions with them. One attitude that I must possessed is patience. It is proper for a person who asks questions to be patient because not everyone you are talking is as approachable as the one you talked first. The person who is doing the job is prefer not to answer back the person he or she is about to asked. So for the another challenge or extra challenge, I may able to talk to their leader or higher positioned official for me to be listened. In that case, it is not a problem for me anymore because for sure the crowd will listen to their official or officials. So in that case, I will be able to explain to them and orient them for my purpose of coming to their barrio or barangay. One appropriate words for them to give is that I wont give promises that I know I'm not sure of becoming true. So it is just possible for me to just say the facts for them to know. So for the final challenge, it is possible for me to just focus on the topic I'm in. That I will use not only one reference and talk not only to those involve but also to those who are satisfied with some good actions to that problems.

Within this information environment I'm in, its more likely appropriate to not only think for the organization's progress. Cause the organization is in progress if the consumer or the clients are satisfied by the work. And the information systems environment as well is not being surrounded by the information systems only, but also it is being surrounded by people to do the works with the help of the information systems.

We are asked to identify an information environment of our choice and write an essay to address questions like “What should be your role within this environment?”,“How can the principles of information organization and representation help you in performing this role?”, “What are are the challenges facing you in performing the role ?and “How will you address these challenges?”

I had to start this by reminding myself that after my graduation and that would hopefully be less than two years from now, I have to work. Of course, it’s everybody’s goal, I mean, that is the reason why we enroll in college, to prepare ourselves, to get a job, a better job for ourselves. I take up IT so I have to work in an IT environment. I have to engage myself with IT people and in IT world. The truth is, I am not yet certain what exactly will I become and what exactly my job would be after I graduate. I had a lot of friends who graduated in IT- related course and most of them are working in call centers around the world. I don’t blame them or judge them. And yet, deep inside, I had always dreamed to work in a big company as a Business intelligence analyst. That is what I want for now and of course, nobody really knows if there’s a chance for that to happen, it is still in the hands of God. Yes, I want to work in a big company and I really mean big like the Bank of the Philippine Island, or Ayala Land, or San Miguel ,or PLDT. And before that, I just want to remind you that it’s not a sin to dream, in fact, it’s free to dream. Every one of us can dream as much as he/she wanted. I dreamed of designing and developing company data analysis and report solutions; review and analyze data from internal and external resources; communicate analysis results and make recommendations to senior management because that is what business intelligence analyst do. I am not yet yearning to work abroad or anywhere outside the country to get a high paying job, although we all know that it’s everybody’s dream, to work abroad. However, if there is an opportunity, definitely I will grab it. But I have a simple aim in life, to work and to become happy with what I am doing.

I will work as a business intelligence analyst in a big company and it is my job to design and develop company data analysis and report solutions; review and analyze data from internal and external resources; communicate analysis results and make recommendations to senior management. I will play a very important role in the company and I will do everything to become able to play that role effectively. My role is to provide a bridge between the business and IT, working with both sides to propose changes to processes and systems to meet the needs of the business. I will act as a liaison between functional areas such as HR, finance, marketing and technical areas, like development. My work with project managers is involved with software development or process management. I always believed that my job is very important in a certain company. As what I have heard, business analyst is a hot commodity right now due to business reliance on technology. According to Jim McAssey, "The global delivery capabilities of technology today make the challenges of successfully bridging the gap between business and IT even harder. My role is necessary for a reason that business and IT are two different fields that should go hand in hand together.

I know that upon working in a company, there are lots of things to consider for we all know that we will not work alone, we are going to work and deal with different kinds of people and suit ourself with them so that we will become an effective employee. In the time I will going to work, I know I have to consider lots of factor and one of these are the principles of information organization and representation. I have to know all these things so that I can perform my role effectively. There are many principles of information organization and I think it differs in every organization. But there are three common principles that I need to consider. These three principles of knowledge organization that I have known are knowledge needs to be organized for communities. designing tools to support the organization of knowledge, guiding principle must be that of user orientation and predominant usage. And lastly, standardization and networking provide infrastructures, which facilitate effective and efficient access to information and documents. These principles, if properly used will help me to become even more effective in my job. The knowledge needs to be organized for communities is essential because I have as what I've said, I have to get involve with people because I will not work with myself alone, I have to deal with managers, stockholders, business associates, and every individuals who compose the organization or company. Designing tools to support the organization of knowledge and guiding principle must be also considered specially for the kind of job that I have, to design and develop company data analysis and report solutions. This includes the ability to design front ends and interfaces. I must posses a talent in doing so. I have to make sure that the design I made is acceptable to the user and every individual who will take a glance unto it will surely understand. And finally, the last principle talks about standardization and networking provide infrastructures, which facilitate effective and efficient access to information and document. This principle generally talks about the demonstration and sharing of expertise and perspectives in relation to the organization of knowledge. If one wants to associate these principles into just a few words, they can use communities, user orientation and standardization and networking, respectively. I do believe that these principles principles of information organization will help to fulfill my role so that I will become an effective business intelligence analyst.

However, I also believed that it is not an easy task. I mean, there a lot of challenges that I had to face in performing this role. And I know that this is just natural. I mean in our every action, challenges always accompany us, not to bring us down but to make us strong so that next time around, we will become more effective. First and for most is the competition. We are all aware that competition is one of the most common problem in a job knowing that everybody’s aiming to become the best. Maybe I can address this by making sure that I am really competent. Even when I am a fresh graduate, I had a lot of learnings because I already practice even before I graduated. Also, another problem is that technology is changing. I mean, what we had right now is nothing to what we are going to have in the following years. Technology changes so fast I had to keep myself in touch. I mean, I have to be always updated so that I will not find it hard to deal with other competing companies. Another challenge is if there exist someone who can perform better than I do. Maybe in this case, I had to humbly accept this and realize that each is given different talents and ability. What makes sense is the fact that we use this talent and we help hand in hand for the benefit of the company. We had different strengths and limitations and it's all right as long as we are giving our best in everything we did. My inexperience can also influence on how am I going to perform my role yet I know this can be handled well if I am just willing to learn and improve myself.

For now, these are my ideas. I know this is subject to change as time comes. However, I am certain that I always dreamed of seeing myself in the future working in a big and top company here in the Philippines as a business intelligence analyst wherein my role would be to design and develop company data analysis and report solutions; review and analyze data from internal and external resources; communicate analysis results and make recommendations to senior management. I will provide a bridge between the business and IT, working with both sides to propose changes to processes and systems to meet the needs of the business. I will act as a liaison between functional areas such as HR, finance, marketing and technical areas, like development. I know I will encounter challenges, that is why, as of now, I'm slowly practicing myself so that I will become a competent applicant after I graduated. The world is all about competition and lucky are those who start to prepare early. Also, I have to apply the principles of information organization and representation so that I can perform my role effectively.

We are about to Identify an information environment of our choice and write an essay to address the following questions: What should be our role within this environment? How can the principles of information organization and representation help you in performing this role? What are the challenges facing you in performing the role? How will I address these challenges?

In these present-days, the use of technology is fast as easy. Information Technology plays a vital role in the field of business. It ruled around the world or even influenced the industry-level of the business. Information technology nowadays certainly help in promoting the automated workforce of any organization to provide cost-effective services and quality products.

The spring of technology nowadays contributes a big role in our society. Due to rapid development of technology, information can be acquire anytime, anywhere and everywhere.

The fundamental perception of information technology is to support the mission of the organization. All organizations are exposed to uncertainties, some of which impact the organization in a negative manner. In order to support the organization, IT professionals must be able to help their organizations’ management understand and manage these uncertainties. Managing uncertainties is not an easy task. Limited resources and an ever-changing landscape of threats and vulnerabilities make completely mitigating all risks impossible. Therefore, IT professionals must have a tool set to assist them in sharing a commonly understood view with IT and business managers concerning the potential impact of various IT security related threats to the mission. This tool set needs to be consistent, repeatable, cost-effective and reduce risks to a reasonable level.

Looking back with the definition of Management Information System (MIS) it is the internal controls of a business covering the application of people, documents, technologies, and procedures. In addition, it refers to the group of information management methods tied to the automation or support of human decision making. In our class, we referred them as the combination of people ware, hardware, and software interacting each other for the organization to be more effective and proficient in every field of work.

Information Environment was defined as any organization having information system circulating in their environment. A lot structures nowadays, adopts this concept since we are living now in the world where computers (Information Technology) is the most commonly used in any establishment. Big companies here and abroad absolutely using this concept for along time.

As of now I am not really looking forward for my future career for there is a lot of things to do. I must not fail any of the subject this semester. Learning in the university is not a guarantee to acquire a good job in the near future. You must work hard for it. As a requirement of this subject, I must have the career plan for myself to be more mentally and psychologically ready for the job that I intended to acquire.

If I were to choose an information environment, I'd prefer to work in a huge company here in the Philippines like, Ayala Land Inc., Globe Telecom, San Miguel Corp., Bank of the Philippine Islands, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp., Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., SM Prime Holdings
and Banco de Oro Unibank. But if I will given a chance to go abroad. Why not!!!.

I would like to be a Staff Consultant which my role is to assist with project planning and requirement specifications; create prototypes and alternatives with colleagues. I am really looking forward of being a consultant. All you need to do is to sit back and relax check the papers of the consulter.

Two important aspects of IT organization that should be considered include the place of the IT organization in the health care institution and the internal structure of the IT organization. With regards with the two principles, in the field of health care institution there should be a leadership of the IT organization and policies. Like me in my future job, I will see to it that my employee in the company had enough compensations. Moreover, there should also be a technical management and services that would help the organization in the decision making. Translation of institutional goals into IT efforts, blending academic and business efforts, blending developmental efforts with traditional business software acquisition.

I know to have this role, there might be a problems arise upon moving on the job. There might be a massive number of obstacles that may come into my way going to success. I mean in every luck theres always be a problem accompanied to it. As a staff consultant in a huge company here in the Philippines I must possess a good manner for the people who surrounds me for them to understand my work. Furthermore, I must know the limitation of a good consultant. In every problem solved, there are learnings that I might be used in the next journey of my job.

As an IT professional, I must be updated with the latest technology to avoid hesitation of the new advancement.

I can't wait to see myself working on the big company either here in the Philippines or abroad.

PostSubject: Re: Assignment 10 (Due: before September 26, 2008, 13:00hrs)   Fri Sep 26, 2008 9:12 am

As I searched the internet, I found an interesting topic about this information environment (http://www.fas.org/irp/doddir/dod/jp3_13.pdf). It is all about the United States of America (USA)’s military information operations. I read some of its content. The article defined the information environment as the information environment is the aggregate of individuals, organizations, and systems that collect, process, disseminate, or act on information. The actors include leaders, decision makers, individuals, and organizations. Resources include the materials and systems employed to collect, analyze, apply, or disseminate information. The information environment is where humans and automated systems observe, orient, decide, and act upon information, and is therefore the principal environment of decision making.

A military is an organization authorized by its nation to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country or by attacking other countries by combating actual or perceived threats. Information systems doesn’t really concern only in business but it is also helps a country by depending it to some threats. If one day I can be outsourced by the government to help the military in their information system, I would like to be a part of the intelligence group.

What should be my role within this environment? How can the principles of information organization and representation help me in performing this role? What are the challenges facing in performing the role? How will I address these challenges?

As a part of the intelligence group, my role for the military is to make plans, strategies and tactics for their operations. Supporting the military operations can result on success of their battles and combats. In investigation, giving necessary information about a case and the people involved in this case – the victims, witness and especially the suspects. Giving instructions on the training of the troops and soldiers would enhance their performance.

To rate these roles I stated, I would rate the planning of strategies and tactics of the military operations is the most important role. As their function in protecting the country threats, like terrorism, will fail, the country will suffer. Through automation in deciding the plans on the operation of the military, it really helps them to have a successful battle. Computer simulation is one way of in automating the plans of their tactics and strategies on the operation. Simulating the operation would predict what is going to happen or the danger they will face. Like most action movies with high-tech devices we’ve seen, they are using computer simulation like for example predicting where could be a nuclear bomb will explode.

Second would be in an investigation. It would be a great help in giving information of a case, including the people involve in a case. Giving the information or background of a suspect could help the investigation, knowing if the suspect has a history on the same case. It would also be the victim is accusing the suspect but the suspect is innocent. So it needs the information of the people involves with a particular case. With this information it helps the military or the investigator solves a particular case.

Third would be the training of the troops and soldiers. Knowing each of the soldier or a troop would also know the right training for them. In this matter, it also involves the health of the soldier. Right training using the right information enhances the ability of an individual or a group within the military.

Information would really help the military in its function in the country but there are challenges will occur in this information environment, first, the accuracy and completeness of the information. Incomplete, wrong and miscalculations of the data that acquired in each role will have a great effect. In the first role, inaccurate and incomplete information will lead to failure in the operations of the military or even worst it would cause death to a soldier or the whole troop. In second role, wrong information would cause the innocent person will be jailed or the victims can’t get the justice they’ve wanted. And the last role, miscalculations of the capacity of every soldier or a troop would worsen the ability of the military members that they may be injured or their past accidents may also worsen. And the second challenges, the security of this information. Securing the information also affect the military operations, if the enemy know the tactics, strategies and plans of the military that may lead to failure of the operations.

Addressing these challenges is to carefully analyze all the data and make sure that the data gathered are complete. There would also errors will occur since we are just human that commits mistakes. Pertaining to security of the information, as information technology professional I should be aware on the hackers on the information systems within the military.

Identifying at least one institution that has best possible information environment in which that said organization applies management information systems and information technology efficiently and competently. Institutions that have more expertise in improving their establishment better than any other agencies can. The aim of information environment is to help provide convenient access to resources for learning through the use of resource discovery and resource management tools and development of better service and practice.

Well, it will be a difficult and complicated thing to just think of a simple and diminutive corporation. It will take time and it will not be easy. But the idea of an ordinary information environment is helping me to begin.

When you think of an information environment, the first thing that would come to our mind is those big ones. Setting aside such high prerequisites in identifying an information environment, let us put an emphasis on small companies that has terrible information environment and envision there self to be the top company that offers not just the best but the perfect. Let us start with small ones for big things starts with small things.

The rapid growth and development of electronics that is ready to accept something or to make do with something rather than taking further action or making more demands offers massive and growing possibility for all the people living this earth.

MyndTech Management Services is a company of people engaged in the culture of software development, a costumer service oriented and competitive company in the Philippines committed to product innovation, service excellence, and social responsiveness. MyndTech Management Services offer software development which is of good quality but with affordable prices for the development their clients.

Since Mynd Consulting offers services that will help their clients to save time and money. They are design to work to develop the best outsourcing strategy of a company, no matter how large or small. Like any things, it is already in nature that every Information Technology professional has responsibility that they will render services that will help the organization in their everyday business jobs to be easier and hassle free. Being an IT student and soon to be specializing my expertise somewhere in the middle of IT businesses, it will be my aim to help to strengthen the organization to construct a widespread information environment.

I have to do the part of making the most of the full significance of the high quality information that already exist in the company to make it more grow with the intention that it will suit each individual’s particular needs especially the clients. I will continue to improve the management and serving of quality information for the reason that it will be a huge potential to enhance the creation of knowledge. Since I am already a part of the environment, I am task to work for better ways to manage records or databases containing fixed data. It will be a major challenge for me especially when it comes to determining the extent to which information access systems can be made easy for people outside work to understand it and how to use it. Because as Information Technology professional, it is my work to further understand the human thought course of action.

Actually, there are numbers of ways in how should I play my roles in the information environment especially on my choice of company which is MyndTech Management Services. You just have to think of it as if you are thinking of eating a desert food even if you’re stomach is already full. You will find ways in order for you to eat that desert food and to ease the longing of that food even though you can’t take it anymore. Sometimes we always cross the bridge when we get there. But in a real world of businesses you will have to think of a possible way to play the role of being in the environment before it will happen.
The development of a business or in an information environment is accompanied by the staffs who keep on making things happen. I, as an IT professional, hope so; have to keep good records of employees. Without them, an organization wouldn’t be made possible. They are the one who steps to the stepping stone of a success. But they can be a stumbling block if they are not trained well.

IT leader needs to be positioned with other leaders and staffs inside the institutions who are making strategic decisions and that the internal IT structure needs to be a role-based mixture of central and non-central components. Understanding the mission of the organization and actively used change-management techniques is also considered as a part of the role I must play in actual information environment.
Therefore, it is also my role of guiding and making every staff a workforce of improved, organized and well educated worker. They need to understand what would there roles be in making things happen. Understanding each of the staff helps business understands and meets new obligations including the process of developing the organization. It means balancing an individual’s right to the privacy of personal information with the need of the organizations to use that information into business purposes.

Never cease learning, for it is the only key to a thing called success. Never limit yourself in small things. Let’s not go for a dip in small things rather let us swims to a sea full of knowledge in order for us to gain more thoughts. ‘makipagsabayan tayo sa takbo ng panahon. Ang hinay dali mabiyaan.’

Since technology is growing continually, there are already various information resources and principles of information organization and representation that can be used to support and to help me in preparing these responsibility in my field of work. Some business or enterprise modeling approaches are determined to reflect corporate goals into business process models by extensively using object oriented principles. Then they emphasize the object oriented principles’ potential in the strategic orientation of information systems and technology in an information environment. These kinds of representation or principles will help me in performing my role in the information environment.

Standardization and networking provide infrastructures are one of the basic principles I need to consider. Infrastructures refers to the availability and use of advanced information services by means of a variety of high-capacity facilities especially computers and computers networks. In relation to the adopted information environment, having such upgraded infrastructure will help improve and provide abundant information at high capacities to the generic public. Internet is one of the examples that best exemplifies these entire concepts.

Other principles are designing tools to support the organization of knowledge; guiding principles must be that of user orientation and main usage. One of the services that Mynd Consulting offers to their clients is widget development. After developing widgets, they are passed to our web designers and, then, they undergo testing. This process is done to ensure that the products that they will give to their clients are of the highest quality. In relation to this, the support of the designing tools is a big help in order for Mynd Consulting achieve high quality product designs for their clients. Other services of Mynd Consulting are web design in which it is the process of creating and manipulating the different elements of a website into a unified and pleasing work of art. This the time when such basics principles mention above support the company and the IT expert in performing her roles. They will coordinate with you to arrive at the look that you would like to achieve.

The needs of the community for information or documents is a representation that it can take part in helping me as an IT professional in performing for better things to more improve the information environment. Since MyndTech offers services related to the World Wide Web or by the use of the internet, and since we are now revolving in a world where technology is mostly the one who takes part in our everyday lives and the demand of the services such as the Mynd Consulting offers is a big contribution not just in performing its role in the information environment but in the real word of business concerning big profits.
In the field of business, there are many instances that the organization will turn upside down. There are lots of possibilities that an institution will face trials especially in managing its information environment. The rapid growth of technology is one of the possible causes of some technological and economic failure for the reason that the staff cannot manage well and work well because they are struck with the truth that they need to compete with other fast growing companies in the pursue of better management of technology and economic issues regarding the needs and wants of the client.

As a human, we are created to encounter and be aware of the trials and tribulations not just in life but in the real humanity of our existence and we are legally responsible to deal with it. In the area of information environment, problem arises every now and then especially in performing my role in making my information environment to be in top of every thing. How will I address such issues? Well, it is a matter of life and death, I think.

Considering the fact that I am not really one of the best and top IT graduates in the country, and to think that I cannot consider myself the best in the field of Information technology. Adjusting will be one of the common hindrances, I suppose, in performing such role. Adjusting with the environment especially when trial comes. When I am just thinking of a solution that solves the problems, it makes me panicky, tense and crazy.

But because I am born with self confidence and faith in a lot of things, maybe I can still manage to adjust and still set my eyes on the goal. And since USeP graduate are globally competitive and morally upright, I have to keep on believing that I can make the company’s information environment more globally competitive than I am.

In relation to MyndTech Management Services information environment, having a small population of staffs and a wide variety of employment to its clients, an extensive knowledge and skills is actually a big factor in achieving the goal but it will also be one cited problem in making my roles in the environment an excellent one. Experience is not totally a question because it can be learned. But the lack of awareness and proficiency in handling an institution can harm the designed and planned business development.

Fund is also a challenge, actually, it is a big challenge adds the fact that my chosen information environment has services such as outsourcing and they engaged in the culture of software development. Being an IT expert, I must find ways to determine how to fund this essential IT effort. First, I need to determine how much is currently allocated to this kind of IT activities. Well, I know the amount is usually much more than anticipated. Together with the other staff, we need to determine how best to use this ongoing investment to support the IT plans and the institutional mission.

One of the few issues that will challenge me in performing my role is to consider how best to manage change in the organization as it moves to a new organizational and work paradigm. Well, when you together with the other personnel have been together for so long, it will be easy to cope up and manage with the fast changes in the organization. We can make little adjustments that we feel very comfortable in but we feel good in. I think that is the most important for us individually as people not just an employee to feel positive and energized.

And the last one but not the least I think, is the issue concerning the communication both within and beyond IT organization. As an IT leader, I need to widen my ears in the problems and needs of the people working around me. Always keep the bond, since communication is essential but seldom adequate.

An information environment can be characterized as the set of networks or online services that support publishing and use of information and learning resources1. There probably isn’t a perfect information environment but we can only make use of these systems to their fullest potential.

There are countless numbers of information environments present in the world today. With the fast development of technology, various information environments have grown so big that they are able to span the whole world. One example of an information environment I can give is the internet, particularly the famous websites of Google and Yahoo! These sorts of information environments are very big and complicated. Like I said, because of the elevating complexities of modern living, information environments also go with the trend.

As a student, I can only think of an ideal information environment. There are certain components that I want to be present in an information environment which I think will benefit me as a student. An ideal information environment for me would be like a Virtual Learning Environment or an Intelligence Department in a company. Since learning never stops, it is desirable to have an information environment that would be able to house all the new information. In short, an expandable and flexible environment is advantageous.

The amount of digital information available also seems infinite. Based on experience, to be able to get the exact information I want, I have to browse through numerous pages before actually acquiring the information I need. Now, in my opinion, a desirable information environment should be one that provides the user with ease in searching for relevant information. Having to go through a complex set of web browsers and search engines reduces the intake of digital information because users tend to spend more time looking for relevant information rather than getting them. Moreover, digital information tends to be generalized or international. I’ve had difficult experiences when looking for local information. So, it would also be desirable that an information environment provides the users with access to both local and international content. It must also be noted that most users do not like having to look through hundreds of pages of mixed searches. So, I suggest that an ideal information environment should segregate local and international resources for the users’ convenience. It must provide customized searching to enhance the users’ intake of digital information.

In the institution that I go to, I cannot identify an effective information environment. Although we do have access to the Internet, it’s pretty much useless because of the fluctuating connection. Therefore, an ideal information environment should be one that provides continuous service and support to the users. It should always offer the users access to the information that they need at any time. It should be an environment where users can actively and quickly process information for their needs.

An ideal information environment should also be able to house diverse kinds of digital resources while maintaining the usability and ease-of-access for the users. A desirable environment should be able to accommodate the rapidly evolving forms of digital information. These forms that I’m talking about are the audio, video, data and others. With the never-ending evolution of digital media, an information environment should be flexible to accept the new development. For a more advantageous operation, it should be able to deliver these contents efficiently to the users.

Probably, the most important characteristic of an information environment is interaction. An environment does not consist of only one being. It is an internetwork, an interweaving thread of digital resources. Therefore, this kind of environment should not be made rigid and one-sided. I think that an ideal information environment should be one that does not only allow the users to access and view digital information but also should allow them to modify the information. In my point of view, information or knowledge is not a stable thing. Many changes and new discoveries are being made and an effective information environment should be able to address these changes and inform the users about them. For an environment to be interactive, it is necessary that it allows the users to share information via digital means. This process is similar to peer-to-peer communication or online file-sharing. Of course, it should be made sure that information exchanged is true and valid.

Finally, a secure information environment where users can interact safely is a must. An ideal information environment should assure the users that the resources that they are getting are safe. Even though creating a completely secure working environment is impossible in my opinion, it should be able to minimize the risks and threats that the users are faced with. With this, we can be assured of efficient and reliable information exchange.

After identifying an information environment of my choice and presenting my views on what characteristics it should possessed, as a student and a part of an information environment, I have a role that I wish to perform.

As I am still a mere student, I cannot say that my role in this environment is very big but I believe that it is crucial. Right now, I am still a member/user of this information environment. As a user, I emphasize the importance of information environments. I have to play my part as the benefactor of the services offered by this environment. I have the responsibility of following the environment protocols and using the digital resources to my advantage. The resources that I am able to access should be put to good use and utilized so that I can help this environment prosper someday. My role as a user is what keeps the information environment alive and active because without users like me, these environments are considered dead and useless. I can relate this role to what I learned in Human Resource Management. Even if an organization has become dependent on technology, humans still run the organization and keep it working. In the same way, the existence of users like myself is what’s been giving purpose and meaning to this digital environment.

In the future, my role in the information environment will eventually change. By then, I will be one of those checking and monitoring the environment so that the users will be able to access information easily and efficiently. I will perform the role of developing new and innovative ideas and services to enhance digital information exchange and enrich the learning and research process. I will be a part of a collaborative community that manages this environment and provide fast and reliable service to all users of the digital resources. I will contribute to the bank of knowledge and information in the environment so that I can share my own resources. As a constant user and contributor to the environment, I will become a role model to the other people in the community. By showing them how to utilize the resources provided by the information environment, I am not defeating the purpose of this digital information exchange system and am giving it its due credit as a dynamic information environment.

For me to be able to perform my role now and my role in the future, there are certain principles of information organization and representation that I need to take note of. These principles serve as my guidelines so that I will know my privileges and limitations as a part of the whole information environment. These principles are the foundation of the whole system and as an important part of this so-called information environment, I have the responsibility of upholding these principles and living up to them. In representing information, I should also be careful to access only those resources that are safe and beneficial for me and to other people. We should be careful about how we represent information because it can come in many forms and so we must be sensitive to the needs of the members or users of the information environment.

Clearly, establishing an effective, efficient and reliable information environment is not an easy task to do. It could take even a joint effort of all the “techy guys” in the world but we still can not be ascertained of a fully functional and risk-free environment. Before attaining this ideal information environment, there are certain challenges that we have to face. I can identify a few challenges that I will probably face while performing my role in the information environment. The first challenge that I will face is the limited number of resources. Although my concept of an information environment is one where users can gain access to any information that they need, based on experience, there are just times when I just can not get the exact information that I want. In a way, this defeats the purpose of the whole information environment because not all of the information are present.

Now, I also mentioned that an ideal information environment should be one that provides beneficial information to the users. I, as a user, should also be focused on gaining access to the information that I need. However, because of the presence of miscellaneous and irrelevant resources, my attention gets diverted from the actual information that I want to gather. In short , there are certain distractions and temptations that prevent me from getting what I want. A clear example that I can give is researching on the Internet. It is true that the Internet has a wide range of relevant resources where I can possibly acquire the information that I need. However, because the Internet is a free and open environment, there are many distractions that pull me away from the more important task of gathering the information that is beneficial to me. Based on experience, whenever I use the Internet as a tool for research, I get diverted to doing other matters that are not important. This is a challenge that I think is very difficult to overcome.
Another challenge that I can also identify is the challenge in the security of the information environment. Because information is a crucial ingredient in our everyday lives, it needs to be as accurate and as reliable as possible. If not, the whole information environment would be a failure because it can not provide the efficient and reliable service that it is supposed to give to the users. Therefore, maintaining the security and reliability of the information environment poses a great challenge to all the people who make use of its services.

I also mentioned that my ideal information environment is one that is flexible and expandable. Because of this, there is another challenge that hinders me from performing my role in the information environment. The challenge here is to make sure that, despite its large scale, the information environment is properly maintained and taken care of. Since it is an expandable system, constant monitoring and updating should be done.

Finally, and probably the most influential factor, or challenge, that I face is the financial problem. It is good to aspire of an information environment where I can easily and safely gain access to information that I need. However, all the other challenges that I mentioned above are also connected in some way to the available financial resources. I must admit that in order to achieve this ideal information environment, I have to spend a lot of time, effort and money. It can't be helped that possibly a large sum of money is needed to properly implement and maintain an information environment. Even though it is said that the lack of money should not hinder progress, we must admit that it definitely has a great influence on how far we can go on developing such projects.

Now that I have identified the possible challenges that will slow me down in performing my rightful duty in the information environment, I also have devised a strategy of my own in order to decrease, if not totally overcome, the challenges that I mentioned. Since I want an interactive information environment, I must be open-minded to the ideas of other people. I should not limit myself only to what I know because there is a lot of knowledge in the world that I do not know of. By opening my mind to other ideas and using collaborative effort with my peers, together we can create a desirable information environment that could cater to the needs of any kind of user. Also, since I have limited resources, I have to be creative and resourceful in performing my role in order to get the most out of what I have. I must have a clear and straight mind when performing my role to avoid getting distracted by trivial matters and to be able to focus more on the things that need attention. With constant interaction, adjustment and implementation, I could possibly attain this ideal information environment and perform my role in its never-ending cycle of information exchange.

The dominant industry, should I say, of information environment today is more of the multimedia industry. That’s the kind of information environment I want myself to be a part of. Everywhere, in the television, radio, and even in internet. All you can hear and see are part of this information environment of multimedia Industry. This specific area of information is too general. But that’s what’s making me soaked into this kind of environment even as early as now. Engaging me into this field would be both hard and easy in some aspects.

Ever since several kinds of broadcast methods started, multimedia industry has also become a part of the big picture. I mean, what would be the broadcasting’s art without it? Broadcasting itself is already multimedia. Never will multimedia survive without being supplied with the latest in information technology. In this vast and fast progression of information in our generation, updates in multimedia are a big demand. In order to be competitive enough in this industry, it is a must that you’ll be the frontier in the latest update in information today.

Now, what are some of the common multimedia representation that we see? Advertisement, animations, graphics, audio, website, and even other applications in some common gadgets.
Animation, what comes in your mind when you her anime? For sure you’ll think of cartoons. How about animation? Maybe how cartoons are made. Well that could be accepted. But see, animation has been playing a big role in commerce. It has shown a big impact from young ones until adults. Simple animations can generate your pocket with more money. Television commercials are made through animations that attract consumers. Also in movie industry, animation plays a big role. This has also become a part of the information environment.

Graphics has also become a part of this multimedia industry that also gave a big impact. I’m so much inclined in creating graphics. It’s not just about making images. Graphical multimedia also includes several stuffs that involve graphics. Like me, I’m also fund of creating shirt designs. Again, another good source of income. As early as now I could gain profit from my designs that is why I also am more into this kind of information environment.

Audio multimedia has also now become a trend. But not just speaking of being trendy, it also is a part of this information era. You just don’t create sounds or whatever. You also have to learn it. It doesn’t always have to be made by artists. Remember that software used by recording companies is made by computer wizards. Singers don’t make it. This still includes us techie guys as one of the people group who can work on several areas. There’s just got to be some sort of specialization.
Animation and audio industry as a link to the information environment is more likely to be understood as some sort of industry where information is needed. It doesn’t mean you have to be an artist or whatever it needs to be. I’m citing the fact that as information technology specialist, we could participate in these areas through establishing specializations in creating some sort of software that could help enhance the certain industries.

Websites, web developing, or other web thingy. These play a big part in the world of information. Everywhere you go, as long as internet is accessible, the World Wide Web is just at the tips of your fingers. Information can be shared in and is at the reach of every mankind. Now what’s interesting in engaging yourself into the world of internet? Though some are not totally beneficial, if you know what I mean, being a part of its world can give you more than what you want, more than what you need. But still it is not a god. Businesses, lifestyle, communication, I mean everything is in store for you. Internet has changed the lives of several people. This is one reason why others even me myself would want to be in this kind of trend. You could even change something through the web. Earning money is more than just a piece of cake. Since when did clicking make money? When internet began, almost all of the things to make life easy came to reality. Communication became more intimate; selling has now reached the overseas.
Now what really makes it interesting in web industry? Let’s try to put the other multimedia examples that I said. Starting in making a web site you will have to know basics in using several computer languages. Then you can crate scripts in making a web site. Now, let us integrate graphics. To make a web site presentable enough for your target of presentation you have to have a design. Now graphical designs are being used here. You have to create graphics that will make a website look good. It is common in all websites. And in web industry now, one CSS(cascading style sheet [used in designing web sites]) can cost more than Php25000, you only have to know how to make cascading style sheet on a web page. Then, as an IT student, undergoing database analysis and design will be helpful in creating a web site. Dynamic web sites can cost Php30000 per package. These prices are freelance price demand. See how you could make big money out of multimedia?

So how can we integrate animation in web developing? You just have to have a know-how in creating simple animation and you can embed it to the page. Now, the rates of simple flash animation could cost Php100 per second, try to think of it, making a simple animation is easy, and do you think there are clients who want to have animations in there site for just 1 second? I don’t think so.
Then the audio, these are miscellaneous in websites. But it still is useful for some.
And one more fact, creating websites nowadays such as websites specified as web 2.0s can make you rich in just a snap. Many have become rich because of websites just like the creators of youtube, mySpace, facebook, dig, etc. Who knows, we could become one. In just a snap, instant Filipino billionaire. See? There’s nothing bad in being ambitious, it also helps, just don’t take it to deep that it might take your dignity out.

Even as a programming major or networking major, the information environment of multimedia still fits the job. In all these aspects, the expertise can be applied. It’s not merely engaging in this industry just to be one of those who are good in using, but making use of the profession as ones who will enhance the innovation of existing technology. This wide range of opportunity will enable people under the information industry participate in major economical issues. Through this, information industry can dominate the economy.

So how can the principles of information organization and representation help me in performing this role? Since putting I’m looking forward for myself in taking this step for my status or even now that I am slowly making it happen, the principles will help me establish my goal, whether to pursue or change my mind. As I mold myself as a being participating in such environment, considering the principles would be helpful enough to look forward for plans, and young as I am, I can establish visions and goals I have to achieve the moment I put myself into it. I should consider the place I will be participating, that all those things I am planning to pursue under the environment will be enough to support it. Looking forward to a positive outcome is always our aim, how could someone think of a plan without merely reflecting. Making a pre-step in my plans will enable me to push through the plans that I have. In this information environment of multimedia, considering the principles is a must, looking at it to see if the principles may be applied in my zone. As early as now, I do have to decide where I will be working for that plan, and the principles will help guide me through the destination of my work responsibility.

What are the challenges that I will take in stepping through this plan? Or what are those barriers that I should consider? Well this is what makes it hard, the competition between people participating in multimedia is very strong. As if the traffic of vehicles are heavy. As I heard some experiences, being recognized or being on top you have to go through several sacrifices. You see, even elementary got the know-how on computers. I could consider them as challenge. Can you imagine even those kids could bring down ideas of elders. How could you pursue if at the first place your initial rivals are kids? That is one good challenge for me. But as for the experience and status, if a student really finishes studies and got some bonus skill plus patience, there is nothing impossible in reaching goals.
Another thing that I could take as a serious challenge is the real world of multimedia, you see, if you apply to a company that is inclined to multimedia its either of the two, you get the job or you find another job. But I don’t. The very hard thing is being a freelancer. But as a graduate, why would you go freelancing if you could manage to give it your shot for companies?

Another thing is economy; being part of the multimedia industry you have to look at the zone if it is fit for the job. Just like what I said, you have to consider the principles in pursuing the plan or else you’ll get frustrated. If the multimedia economy in a place is good, then go on. It’s always good to see the demand of your service in a place. If not, it will be hard for you to make a living. Honestly speaking, all of these things are for the purpose of living as a normal human who needs a shelter food and clothing. If the place is not good for you, then go, find another place if you want to insist your goals for yourself. It’s better than to change your mind at the end of everything. Make a move.

But for me, the most difficult challenge a person could have is he himself. It’s a matter of commitment and discipline. Not yet as a true professional in the said information environment but as a student yet. How could all this self envisions be done if at the beginning of every step a person has already been corrupt to his own self? Even if he could find a turning point, everything will be out of its place. You see, every person blames other things for some sort of mistakes, but the truth is the person, he himself, is also the one to be blamed. It is not sometimes but always. For we are the one who chooses for our own. We make our own decision. We have our free will, so we have our own consequences to be faced for every step we make along the way. We are lead and guided by God in a way that he provided us, it is through his word-The Bible. Now being corrupt Id really a matter of self management, committing mistakes are part of our undirected decisions.

Face it, you are the hardest being to tame. You can’t even face yourself well in the mirror if the problem is within you. You even try to deny yourself.

After all of these, choosing to be in a specific information environment, such as the multimedia industry, is both easy and hard. It is easy in a way that achieving it will be simple if discipline within one’s self is present and hard in such a way that our selves are the most difficult thing to manage. We ourselves are the biggest challenge for us.

I’m looking forward for all of us to become successful one day. More than just what we know and dream about.

PostSubject: Re: Assignment 10 (Due: before September 26, 2008, 13:00hrs)   Sat Sep 27, 2008 10:31 am

Technology. Nowadays, it has come to have widespread rapid development and expansion. It has brought forth to the civilization the significant and convenient applications and innovations. It has provided the world with ease and comfort particularly on communications and transportations. With regard to management of information, automation of manual systems has been made. And so there is what we called IS (Information System).

Information System. It is a system that comprises of people, machines, and methods organized to collect, process, transmit, and disseminate data and information in an organization. It may be automated or manually processed. It deals with the development, use and management of an organization's IT infrastructure. The study of information system, originated as a sub-discipline of computer science, in an attempt to understand and rationalize the management of technology within organizations.

I think it is an essential element in an organization to have an information system for them to be able to manage and handle their important documents, files and information within their institute with less or no difficulty or trouble. An automated information system would be better. It is to centralize, to integrate and to access the data and information within the organization with great ease.

There is now a critical mass of digital information resources that can be used to support researchers, learners, teachers and administrators in their work and study. The production of information is on the increase and ways to deal with this effectively are required. There is the need to ensure that quality information isn’t lost amongst the masses of digital data created everyday. If we can continue to improve the management, interrogation and serving of ‘quality’ information there is huge potential to enhance knowledge creation across learning and research communities.

Why discuss these things? How are they related to an information environment? And what does information environment implies? And what is the information environment’s significance?

Information Environment. The aggregate of individuals, organizations, or systems that collect, process, or disseminate information; also included is the information itself.

Could it be any broader?

Well, if I were to define it based on what they have conveyed, I guess it would a setting or an area wherein interrelated ideas and concepts of information technology are best utilized such as information system or maybe management information system. It is where application of such expertise and knowledge of the said information systems and technology are entirely functional, useful and employed.
The aim of the information environment is to help provide convenient access to resources for research and learning through the use of resource discovery and resource management tools and the development of better services and practice. The information environment aims to allow discovery, access and use of resources for research and learning irrespective of their location.

The information environment is clearly the key to the goals of achieving an interoperable distributed national electronic resource. Cognate strategies, recognizing the interrelation of activities, exist for collections development and management, and communications and are on going for preservation.

Being an IT student, it is my foremost desire to belong in an organization that specialize IT wherein I’ll be molded and improved, where the extent of my capabilities and potential will be put to test and be assessed. So If I were to choose an information environment I guess it would be a customer call center agency or a software product development company just like MyndTech.

The continuing growth of the customer call center as a marketing channel and customer service tool has created an incredible demand for industry professionals. The industrial services specialty includes those service industries executives that have similar skill sets in operations, customer service, new business development and business unit management.

It doesn’t only provide employment. I think it is one of the leading and massive users of most up-to-date information technology thus its information environment is one of my considerations. With regard to the flow and structure of its organization, IT is best exploited.

Present day innovations can help you to enhance customer value, control and reduce costs, meet customer expectations and handle increasing customer contact workloads. Call center is a centralized office used for the purpose of receiving and transmitting a large volume of requests by telephone. It is operated by a company to administer incoming product support or information inquiries from consumers.

Call centers are complex operating environments that depend on a wide variety of sophisticated technology to process transactions. While call center technology is essential, it's really the agents who leave a lasting impression on customers and they are the key to retaining clients and enhancing relationships.

Call center technology is subject to improvements and innovations. Most major businesses use call centers to interact with their customers. The renewed focus on the call center is being driven primarily by three forces: customer demands for more convenient access to goods and services, business pressures to drive down costs, and the convergence of computer and telecommunications technology.

I could not think of the exact and precise position or role best suited to what I’ve aspired to be part of an information environment. I want to manage or administer group of people. Well I guess it’s not that pleasant term to be used. I yearn to lead and guide people. I think it is what everybody desires. To become the head, the leader or practically saying to be a boss, superior, manager or anything you want to call it. I know you know what I mean. Almost everyone aim to be looked up to. I guess its part of human nature to seek for greater power. Anyway, that’s off topic. Whew! To be able to lead and direct, one must know how to follow. For great leaders are great followers. One must keep in mind that by directing and leading, respect between both parties is crucial. Harmony in the work area or field of a team is obtained through respect.

Aside from the fact that I want to lead, I would also like to be part of a team wherein real world interaction with IT is practiced and adopted. I would like to help create, construct, formulate and develop automated information systems and to deal with dilemmas regarding with the existing systems. Maybe become a system analyst in which I can study, analyze, explore, evaluate and govern and decide how the infrastructure of such system would turn out to be. Or maybe become a programmer where I will be able to program or code with my bare hands a proposed and planned system or application. I think it would be suitable in software developing company. Now that would be great, right? But all of these are always up to one’s capacity and potential. You can’t actually lead a group of programmers if you yourself aren’t capable enough.

But I think all of these can be attain and achieve if one will pursue to reach his goals. Hard work, perseverance, patience, and focus, these are just some characteristics one should have to be able to accomplish success.

How can the principles of information organization and representation help in performing favored and ideal role?

Planning and organization of knowledge and information for the society must be considered. Through this principle, I’d be able to keep the fact that it is always the customer or client’s welfare that should be prioritizes and with regard to this detail the learning, knowledge and information should be structured well.

Designing tools to support the organization of knowledge, guiding principles must be that of user orientation and main and predominant usage. This idea focuses and discusses about the layout and design and display options that should be in tune with our understanding of the target community. This will help in better recognition and comprehension of web designs.

Standardization and networking provide infrastructures are one of the basic principles that need to be considered. Infrastructures refers to the availability and use of advanced information services by means of a variety of high-capacity facilities especially computers and computers networks. In relation to the adopted information environment, having such upgraded infrastructure will help improve and provide abundant information at high capacities to the generic public.

Based on what their articles have imparted, there are three principles of knowledge organization. Such are as follows: knowledge needs to be organized for communities; in designing tools to support the organization of knowledge; guiding principle must be that of user orientation and predominant usage; and lastly, standardization and networking of infrastructure.

What are the challenges in performing the role? How these challenges and trials will be addressed?

Well, I don’t have finite or exact ideas and thoughts on what will I come to face relative to performing or executing the role that I have come to have aspired. But for certain, trials, problem or dilemmas won’t be missing out. Surely, difficulty and trouble will come across.

Nonetheless, I think I ought to somehow identify or enumerate few challenges with regards to the role from the information environment that I have chosen.

Relating to information system, there would be a need to update, revise or check any of the system. It is inevitable that system failure can occur. It may be due to corrupted file. Or it can have malfunction or hardware related problems. These problems can be instantly resolved if you are familiar and well-versed with your line of work.

Concerning customer call center agency, regarding with the working relationship with a group, I guess in leading a team, you don’t get to have a pleasant and good relationship with everyone under your supervision. Some would be very stubborn, others would be disrespect you. Well, that’s the least of your worries if so. There would always be various unprofessional colleagues. Now that would really be a headache. Wohoo!

In the field of leading and managing people, there is a need to interact and cope well with those in the upper positions as well as to your subordinates. It is one of the concerns of being in an association to relate and cooperate to everyone who you would get to work with. Professionalism should always be kept in mind. I guess this factor wouldn’t be much of a problem for the reason that interacting with different and unfamiliar people isn’t that new to us. We do get to interact and cope with our classmates in the first day of class, right?

Among the two I’ve mentioned, I think managing and interacting with the people in the organization would be the burdensome. Admit it. It’s not the easy and simple to get along straight away with people you merely know. That is if newbie. And maintaining and sustaining a healthy working relationship with your colleague is really tough.

Communication is as we say a means of connecting or it is a link that bonds or ties people together. It should be preserved, conserved and should be taken good care of to uphold a good relationship.

PostSubject: information environment   Sat Sep 27, 2008 11:22 am

Whew!
This topic is tough, hehe
While I was thinking what to write on this topic, it made me realize many things, what will be my life in the future? What I am, where am I in and who will I become.

Anyway let’s get started
I have always dreamed of being in the military. Before when I’m seeing students from PMA (that once these people were in USEP to showcase their talents or something) I really can’t help myself admire them, the way they walk, stand and face people. They seem to be so disciplined; tough and strong (I should be like that also, in real life). Seeing them walking (chin up, their backs were straight, sometimes they look like a robot when walking), I can’t help thinking that if ever I’d be given a chance to work with these people, I’ll be the most inspired person in this whole wide world (this sounds so funny ha?). and since I’m enrolled in Information Technology and knowing that information and time is essential to these troops, in my own way I can help them at the same time fulfilling what I’ve always dreamed of. To start with, if given the chance to choose an information environment for me to show my expertise in IT, I’d choose to be in line with the military (or anything that involves combat or action)

.But what should be my role in this challenging environment? (This question is so tough!) I believe that in military operations, information gathering is one of the most vital parts in making decisions that will make or break a specific military operation. Information operations are vital to the successful implementation of military acts. Let me define first what an information environment is. According to what I have read in the internet, they define information environment as the aggregate of individuals, organizations, and systems that collect, process, disseminate, or act on information. The actors include leaders, decision makers, individuals, and organizations. Resources include the materials and systems employed to collect, analyze, apply, or disseminate information. In addition, the information environment is where humans and automated systems observe, orient, decide, and act upon information given, and is therefore the principal environment of decision making. Also, I have read that the information environment is made up of three interrelated dimensions: physical, informational, and cognitive.

The physical dimension is composed of the command and control systems, and supporting infrastructures that enable individuals and organizations to conduct operations across all domains (land, sea, air etc). It is also the dimension where physical platforms and the communications networks that connect them reside. This includes the means of transmission, infrastructure, technologies, groups, and populations. For me, the compositions of this dimension are the easiest to measure, and as a result, battle power has usually been measured mostly in this dimension. The informational dimension is where information is collected, processed, stored, disseminated, displayed, and protected. It is the dimension where the Command and control of modern military forces is communicated, and where commander’s intent is conveyed. It consists of the content and flow of information. as a result, it is the informational dimension that must be protected. The cognitive dimension encompasses the mind of the decision maker and the target audience. This is the dimension in which people think, perceive, visualize, and decide. It is the most important of the three dimensions. This dimension is also affected by a commander’s orders, training, and other personal motivations. Battles and campaigns can be lost in the cognitive dimension. Factors such as leadership, morale, unit cohesion, emotion, and state of mind, level of training, experience, situational awareness, as well as public opinion, perceptions, media, public information, and rumors influence this dimension.

On my part, I’d like to add my observations based on the definitions in the three dimensions stated above. In the physical dimension, it is where the information environment overlaps with the physical world, of course, information comes from the real world and as time passes new information are rising thus, it will truly affect or probably last minute changes from the plans when it comes to military operations. Also, physical dimension consists of information systems and networks (as what I have remembered, Information System is a combination of peopleware, hardware and software that collects, analyze and disseminate information to support decision making and control in an organization). The key characteristics of the Physical dimension are as follows: computers, communication systems and supporting infrastructures.

On the other hand, the informational dimension, here, this is where the information is collected, processed, stored, displayed and protected (did I stated it above?). In addition, in Informational Dimension it is where the automated decision takes place. The Informational dimension links physical and cognitive dimensions. So in short, the informational dimension serves as the medium for the first and the third dimension. The key characteristics are as follows: information content and information quality. Information has its own criteria to ensure its quality and validity. Example of which is accuracy, whether the information given is expressing the true situation. Next will be the relevance of the information, this will answer the question of whether the information can be applied or used in the current situation. Then, usability, it refers to the information that is in common and easily understood. Completeness refers to the information that provides the decision maker with all the date needed. And lastly security, it refers to the information that has been afforded adequate protection when required.

And the last dimension is the cognitive dimension; this dimension involves human decision making specifically the commander’s orders. It is a dimension of indefinable, for instance: morale, unit cohesion, public opinion and the awareness of the present situation. The key characteristics include: perceptions, emotions, awareness and understanding. So, with the information above I’d like to be in the physical dimension specifically the one who manages a system that collects, analyzes and disseminate information. This job is so tough knowing that information is very important in this military field.

How can the principles of information organization and representation help me do my job? As stated by Ms Hannah Hernandez, here are the principles: knowledge needs to be organized for communities, next is, designing tools to support the organization of knowledge, guiding principle must that be that of user orientation and predominant usage. and the last would be, standardization and networking provide infrastructures, which facilitate effective and efficient access to information and documents

Based on the given principles, I may able to connect it with my chosen information environment. The first principle caters the information needs by the decision makers in the field specifically the higher officials in which in turn give orders to their troops. Knowledge or information should be organized for them (decision makers) to give clear and well-understood orders to their troops. The second principle refers to the Information Technology Department to design user-interface that will be easily understood by the users of the system. Of course, the design as well as the procedures in the system should be in line with the military’s SOP, though the users will still be oriented on how to use the system, but then it will be essential if it’s user friendly. Lastly, the infrastructures that will facilitate effective and efficient access to the information and documents. In military field, time is of the essence. Even a minute will make or break a situation. So, in order, for the decision makers to decide what to do, the information should readily be accessed (of course with the security password or procedures to prevent computer attacks).

How can these principles help me do my job? As part of an IT department, the team (that includes me) will make sure that the system/s will provide the necessary information or knowledge needed by the decision makers, also make sure that the information passed to the decision makers will pass the criteria I have stated above or in short, the information is reliable. Of course, the medium in which where the information is being passed should be free from distractions, interruptions and lastly will make sure that what information we have obtained will be passed on the decision makers at the exact time they needed it.

In my role as a systems administrator, there are so many risks involved. Physical security is involved. Physical security refers to the security of the personnel working and the equipments. On my personal risks, this will involve the threats because of my job as the administrator of the system (I have the control or access to the information inside), also one of the risks involved is me being kidnapped (exaggerated!). To address this problem, the military forces should design a security measure for its personnel. The next problem I have in mind is the experience I have. Nowadays, for you to be able to be a part of an organization, you should be equipped with the necessary experience. Let me site you a personal experience. I tried to apply in a call center not to mention the name of the company (without consulting my parents about it and for sure they won’t allow me to work. They have their principle to study first before work!), I have my bio-data and resume along with those credentials that will help me get that job. During my interview, he was impressed by the way I talk to him, credentials and referrals I have in hand. But on the experience, there, I was hit. She said they don’t have the time to train people; they need people who have already experiences in that field. What I have in mind that time was, how can I have an experience if they don’t give me a chance to do it? I was so frustrated at that time, that I bought a 199 pesos worth of ice cream and ate it by myself.
As a result, I suffered a very painful toothache (ouch!). I just told myself that “that’s how life works, you win or you lose”, you know charge to experience (hehe). To address the problem, I just told myself, never to give up applying for jobs, there are many call centers that accepts inexperienced people, and they provide trainings before they’ll put you in the job. An example to that is Link2Support now known as Concentrix.
The next will be involving the system I am in-charge with, as what I have said above, the system is the target of computer attacks, computer network attack these are actions taken through the use of computer networks to disrupt, deny, degrade, or destroy information resident in computers and computer networks, or the computers and networks themselves, computer network exploitation and lastly computer intrusion. To address these problems, there should be a department to handle these situations probable the Department of National Defense. I suggest that the said department will come up with a computer network defense. Actions taken through the use of computer networks to protect, monitor, analyze, detect and respond to unauthorized activity in the information systems and computer networks. Also, I would suggest that there should be a crypto security where in it uses cryptology (encrypting technology on the part of the sender and decrypting technology on the part of the receiver) so that the information is secured.

To end this, everyone has their own way of expressing or showing their capabilities whatever field they are in. For me as an Information Technology student, I’d like to practice what I have learned, never giving up on the challenges given to me as a student, as an applicant and as an individual. This reminds me of my favorite quote ”the greatest glory in life is not winning but rising everytime we fall”. Every challenge makes me strong and tough in this world, there are still bigger rocks that will hinder me in what I want to achieve, but nothing is going to stop me (hehe) in pursuing my goals in life. Someday, I will find my own place in this ever-changing, fast pace and challenging world. It is just a matter of guts and confidence. Armed with the blessings from God above and the support and love given to me by my family, surely whatever goals I have in mind right now will be achieved at the right time and at the right place. I remember a text message given to me, the message goes like this, “God wants us to live like a grass, even though it is stepped on, burned and even crashed but still it persists, grows back greener and stronger!” God Bless Everyone!

PostSubject: Re: Assignment 10 (Due: before September 26, 2008, 13:00hrs)   Sun Sep 28, 2008 12:13 pm

When i was browsing the internet, i encountered many information environment. But digital libraries caught my attention. So i decided to choose this information environment.

History of digital libraries

The idea of easy, finger-tip access to information-what we conceptualize as digital libraries today-began with Vannenar Bush's Memex machine (Bush, 1945) and has continued to evolve with each advance in information technology. With the arrival of computers, the concept centered on large bibliographic databases, the now familiar online retrieval and public access systems that are part of any contemporary library. When computers were connected into large networks
forming the Internet, the concept evolved again, and research turned to creating libraries of digital information that could be accessed by anyone from anywhere in the world. Phrases like "virtual library," "electronic library," "library without walls" and, most recently, "digital library," all have been used interchangeably to describe this broad concept.

What is a digital library?

There is much confusion surrounding this phrase, stemming from three factors. First, the library community has used several different phrases over the years to denote this concept-electronic library, virtual library, library without walls-and it
never was quite clear what each of these different phrases meant. "Digital library" is simply the most current and most widely accepted term and is now used almost exclusively at conferences, online, and in the literature.

One thing digital libraries will not be is a single, completely digital system that provides instant access to all information, for all sectors of society, from anywhere in the world. This is simply unrealistic. This concept comes from the early days
when people were unaware of the complexities of building digital libraries. Instead, they will most likely be a collection of disparate resources and disparate systems, catering to specific communities and user groups, created for specific purposes. They also will include, perhaps indefinitely, paper-based collections. Further, interoperability across digital libraries-of technical architectures, metadata, and document formats-will also only likely be possible within relatively bounded systems developed for those specific purposes and communities.

For librarians, this definition of a digital library, and these characteristics, are the most logical because it expands and extends the traditional library, preserves the valuable work that they do, while integrating new technologies, new processes, and new media.

To start with, let us first know some related information that will help me identify my role in the environment.

There is now a critical mass of digital information resources that can be used to support researchers, learners, teachers and administrators in their work and study. The production of information is on the increase and ways to deal with this
effectively are required. There is the need to ensure that quality information isn’t lost amongst the masses of digital data created everyday. If we can continue to improve the management, interrogation and serving of ‘quality’ information there is huge potential to enhance knowledge creation across learning and research
communities.

Nowadays, it is so important to maximize your time since you have many work to do and you have limited time per day. It is also important to be at ease while doing your tasks. Since technology is growing fast, digital library was created to
help those people who have busy schedules like us, students or teachers and other employees.

The aim of the Information Environment is to help provide convenient access to resources for research and learning through the use of resource discovery and resource management tools and the development of better services and practice. The Information Environment aims to allow discovery, access and use of resources for research and learning irrespective of their location.

My role in this kind of environment is to dessiminate reliable and sufficient information since many rely on digital libraries for their research. And if the information given was wrong, insufficient or hoax, that would give our subcribers
another problem. Since our goal is to provide fast and easy access to information, we should not give the people another problem.

The digital library community seems to face a dilemma at this point. Through its pursuit of design goals of flexibility, extensibility, modularity and abstraction, and its promulgation of those goals as common practice through its implementation of XML metadata standards, it has managed to substantially impede progress towards another commonly held goal, interoperability of digital library content across a range of systems.

Challenges

Creating “effective” digital libraries poses serious challenges for existing and future technologies. The integration of digital media into traditional collections will not be straightforward, like previous new media (e.g., video audio tapes), because of the unique nature of digital information it is less fixed, easily copied, and remotely accessible by multiple users simultaneously. Traditional library processes such as collection development and reference, though forming a potential basis for "digital library" work, will have to be revised and enhanced to accommodate these differences. Taking what we know about libraries as a starting point, we can begin to examine in more detail what the specific challenges might be.

Metadata

Metadata is another issue central to the development of digital libraries. Metadata is the data the describes the content and attributes of any particular item in a digital library. It is a concept familiar to librarians because it is one of the primary
things that librarians do--they create cataloguing records that describe documents. Metadata is important in digital libraries because it is the key to resource discovery and use of any document. Anyone who has used Alta Vista, Excite, or any of the other search engines on the Internet knows that simple full-text searches don't scale in a large network. One can get thousands of hits, but most of them will be irrelevant. While there are formal library standards for metadata, namely AACR, such records are very time-consuming to create and require specially trained personnel. Human cataloguing, though superior, is just too labour extensive for the already large and rapidly expanding information environment. Thus, simpler schemes for metadata are being proposed as solutions.

While they are still in their infancy, a number of schemes have emerged, the most prominent of which is the Dublin Core, an effort to try and determine the "core" elements needed to describe materials. The first workshop took place at OCLC
headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, hence the name "Dublin Core." The Dublin Core workshops defined a set of fifteen metadata elements--much simpler than those used in traditional library cataloguing. They were designed to be simple enough to
be used authors, but at the same time, descriptive enough to be useful in resource discovery.

The lack of common metadata standards-ideally, defined for use in some specified context-is yet another a barrier to information access and use in a digital library, or in a coordinated digital library scheme.

Naming, identifiers, and persistence

The fifth issue is related to metadata. It is the problem of naming in a digital library. Names are strings that uniquely identify digital objects and are part of any document's metadata. Names are as important in a digital library as an ISBN
number is in a traditional library.

Any system of naming that is developed must be permanent, lasting indefinitely. This means, among other things, that the name can't be bound up with a specific location. The unique name and its location must be separate. This is very much
unlike URLs, the current method for identifying objects on the Internet. URL's confound in one string several items that should be separate. They include the method by which a document is accessed (e.g., HTTP), a machine name and
document path (its location), and a document file name which may or may not be unique (e.g., how many index.html files do you have on your Web site?). URLs are very bad names because whenever a file is moved, the document is often lost
entirely.

Copyright / rights management

Copyright has been called the "single most vexing barrier to digital library development" (Chepesuik, 1997:49). The current paper-based concept of copyright breaks down in the digital environment because the control of copies is
lost. Digital objects are less fixed, easily copied, and remotely accessible by multiple users simultaneously. The problem for libraries is that, unlike private businesses or publishers that own their information, libraries are, for the most part,
simply caretakers of information--they don't own the copyright of the material they hold. It is unlikely that libraries will ever be able to freely digitize and provide access to the copyrighted materials in their collections. Instead, they will have to develop mechanisms for managing copyright, mechanisms that allow them to provide information without violating copyright, called rights management.

Preservation

Another important issue is preservation--keeping digital information available in perpetuity. In the preservation of digital materials, the real issue is technical obsolescence. Technical obsolescence in the digital age is like the deterioration of
paper in the paper age. Libraries in the pre-digital era had to worry about climate control and the de-acidification of books, but the preservation of digital information will mean constantly coming up with new technical solutions.

The purpose of preservation is to ensure protection of information of enduring value for access by present and future generations (Conway, 1990: 206). Libraries and archives have served as the central institutional focus for preservation, and both types of institutions include preservation as one of their core functions. In recent decades, many major libraries and archives have established formal preservation programs for traditional materials which include regular allocation of resources for preservation, preventive measures to arrest deterioration of materials, remedial measures to restore the usability of selected materials, and the incorporation of preservation needs and requirements into overall program planning.

Preservationists within the library and archival community have been instrumental in developing an array of tools and methodologies to reduce the decay of traditional materials and to restore books and documents that have deteriorated to such an extent that their longevity and usability are threatened. Provisions for fire protection and adequate environmental controls frequently are incorporated into new library and archival facilities. Rehousing of acid-based paper materials is a common task in many repositories and microfilming is used extensively and cost effectively to preserve endangered materials. Undertakings such as the brittle books initiative, the American Newspapers Project, and the NEH-funded microfilming program have saved millions of unique and imperiled items (Preserving the Intellectual Heritage). Many libraries and archives have curbed their voracious appetites for acquisition and collecting in an effort to balance the breadth and depth of their holdings against long-term stewardship responsibilities. The change over from acid to alkaline paper in publishing and much desktop printing counts as a significant victory for preservation.

Libraries around the world have been working on this daunting set of challenges for several years now. They have created many digital library initiatives and projects, and have formed various national schemes for jointly exploring key issues. With several years accumulated experience, the initial enthusiasm surrounding the development of the digital library has been replaced by sober second thought. Librarians have discovered that, with a few exceptions, making a business case for digitization and investments in digital technology is more difficult than first envisioned, especially given the technical and legal constraints that must first be overcome. As with most other technical developments in libraries over the years,
we will have to move forward in small, manageable, evolutionary steps, rather than in an rapid revolutionary manner.

As information professionals, we live in very interesting times. Effective search and discovery over open and hidden digital resources on the Internet remains a problematic and challenging task. The difficulties are exacerbated by today's
greatly distributed scholarly information landscape. This distributed information environment is populated by silos of: full-text repositories maintained by commercial and professional society publishers; preprint servers and Open Archive
Initiative (OAI) provider sites; specialized Abstracting and Indexing (A & I) services; publisher and vendor vertical portals; local, regional, and national online catalogs; Web search and metasearch engines; local e-resource registries and
digital content databases; campus institutional repository systems; and learning
management systems.

All the information i have gathered were based on my research. If i am part of the digital library institute i would like to address those problem and give better solutions to it. Since I too, rely on digital libraries on my research.

PostSubject: Information Environment   Sun Sep 28, 2008 3:08 pm

An Introduction to the readers let me characterized the meaning of Information Environment. An Information Environment can be describe as the set of network or online services that support publishing and use of information and learning resources. At the moment online services providing digital resources tend to operate in a stand-alone manner. The user is therefore required to navigate a complex set of different websites with different search interfaces in order to locate relevant resources. Similarly the resources offered tend to be characterized by a lack of mediation to provide vital signposts to explain context and relevance to the user. It has been recognized that this is one of the key features limiting take up of digital resources. In other words Information Environment is an environment where you can find the information you need in the easiest way.

To take part of the Information Environment services I will allow my self to be in a role of a user like a student user as of my current state now, but not just an ordinary student user but also a good contributor of comments and suggestions to the developer about the services they made.

As a student specially an Information Technology (IT) student there are many things I want to know about the changing technology, I want to know more about things that I’m not aware of specially things that are related to my course. An Information Environment services can help me in my goals because here I can find the answers to my questions not just that I can have my advance research in a simpler way without any delayed, well aside for the speed connection that I’m using. With my teachers that gives us many electronic assignment researches its hard for me to research in an environment that so confusing. So I need a better way to research without puzzlement in my mind. Information Environment could be a great help not just for me but to all students who will going to use it. It allows us to gain knowledge and to advance our mind to things that we are not aware of.

Being a user well a very observant user I just can say that the service I was using is a perfect search engine there should be some bugs and disrupt that I dislike or I’m not convenient with. As a good student (tsar) I just can’t leave things behind or outpace that problem, I will leave some comments about my observations not just my poor observation about the software but also my good observations about it. By doing this I can help the developers improved their programs by fixing those problems. I can send my suggestions so that they can think about it when they will go to update their search engine environment.
Now let’s move on and characterize the meaning of Information Organization and how it will help me in performing my role as a simple user and a contributor. Information Organization is simply organizing information to bring essentially like information together and to differentiate what is not exactly alike. To be simple, Information Organization based in what I read and know it is a way of organizing the things that should be done and needed by a user or even a information environment developers.
According to an article that I read there are three key principles of Information Organization: Knowledge needs to be organized for communities (Communities), In designing tools to support the organization of knowledge, guiding principle must be that of user orientation and predominant usage (User Orientation), Standardization and networking provide infrastructures, which facilitate effective and efficient access to information and documents (Standardization and Networking). The list below are the sub-principles of the three principles, each principles contains break parts that will help me understand further the thoughts of the three major principles.
Communities:
• Libraries have always been established to serve a community
• Needs of the community for information, documents, education and recreation are established through user studies, service delivery, committees ('focus groups'), involvement with stake holders in the community and other interactions with the community
• Libraries deploy their resources (human, financial, documents) according to this need
• Similarly the producers of databases and publishers, who organize knowledge embedded in document and databases, do so with the understanding of the marketplace, and the type and format of information that is likely to cultivate and maintain a loyal customer base
• Portals could be viewed as the electronic agency that tailors document access and information services for specific communities
• Nature of communities varies with the type of portal - public, commercial, internal, etc.
• However, the imperative to develop a community is clear.
• Public service needs to be offered to an identifiable community for resources to continue to support the portal
• Commercial portals need to be convinced that their Internet activities are having a positive effect on awareness, reputation and trade
• Creation of communities cannot be left to chance
• E-organizations need to go beyond defining relationships with the customers, to taking a lead in the definition of the culture and values of the community they are seeking to create
• This definition will assist consumers to identify with a community to which they can contribute
User orientation:
• In the design of access points, index terms, search keys, and, more traditionally, headings, the principles of user orientation and reference to the user's cognitive and semantic frameworks has been long established
o E.g.: AACR for rendering personal and corporate names
• Literary warrant or basing subject access on the literature of a subject is a well-established principle
• Most subject-based tools offer both alphabetical access (through natural language terms) and hierarchical access through a series of related topics
• Classification schemes have been the primary mode of offering access to related subjects
• Traditional classification schemes were hierarchical in nature, as are the menu structures embedded in many web sites
• Limitations of classification schemes has become evident with the growth of knowledge - resulting in cross-classification (location of a topic in multiple hierarchies)
• Many menu-based hierarchies do not use a classification notation - rather use natural language to represent subjects (alphabetic-classed approach)
Standardization and networking:
• Global L&I community has achieved great success in international networks and networking activities
• Support exchange of bibliographic data and documents and a host of other services
o Examples: MARC, ISBD, Dublin Core, Z39.50, OAI, etc.
• Demonstrate the sharing of expertise and perspectives in relation to the organization of knowledge
• Use of these standards also leads to standardization in the interfaces offered to the user:
o Searching effectively across a range of different libraries and databases, so that search skills learned in one environment are transferable to other environments
o Locating documents or information on the basis of citations in other sources

I can tell that the three key principles of Information Organization stated above can help me perform my role in the sense that I can easily distinguished the right and wrong or the “I must” and “I must not”. I can say that because these principles tell us the right things an information environment should do. It helps me realize and know what our community needs. It also provides a simple and friendly ways to the user because of the organized design and nature friendly systems that make it simpler for me to use. It provides me also a high limitation of data searching because menu structures embedded in many web sites. And also classification schemes have been the primary mode of offering access to related subjects I want to hunt. Also as the principle discuss about networking it will be easy for me to connect and to exchange data through the net. I can easily stored and locate my data in their database, not just that, I can also transfer my data easily and safely.

Base on what I know about the three key principles of Information Organization stated above and in the conclusion that I made I can now decide what I should do about making my information environment system more effective to the user. Thanks to the ideas that I gathered from the principle. It will be easy now for me because I have a guideline. Well that is, if my role is an Information Environment programmer and developer. But base in the role that I have given above, I’m just a simple user like student user and a contributor of ideas. The three key principles of Information Organization can help me perform my role by simply ahmm…it serve as a parameter for me to know what should an information environment services contains of. I can justify whether it gives the right ideas or provides the right things and information needed by a simple user like me or does it serve its community well, by giving the correct information and not just a false statements. It will help me in my observations and contributions, if they are lack of things that the principle provides, I can send comments to them that they are lack of these things and so on… and they should be providing these things. Well I guess that’s what the three key principles of Information Organization used to be, a guide and point towards knowledge. That’s why the three principles of Information Organization help me a lot in performing my desired role.

Now let’s proceed to the challenges and consequences that I will be dealing with in performing my desired role.

There are lots of challenges that a user will be facing in performing his simple role. Being a student user there are lots of challenges that I will be going to encounter especially in finding or researching hard topics, and hard understanding about the topic. Even if Information Environment services gives all the necessary answers to my questions I can’t guarantee that all those answers are correct and that will satisfy my needs. The real challenge is that I will have to read and understand those answers so that I can come up with a right solution. Well patience is important with research; I should keep my patience so that I can manage my work well.

As a contributor there are lots of challenges that I will be dealing with in my contributions. I can tell that because I can’t assure that my comments and suggestions will be read by the developer. I can say that because I’m not the only person who uses and contributes in the engine so I have to be patient and persistent in giving contributions. To gain fame and name in the environment I have to be active in their forums and activities so that I will be known as a well contributor. There is also a possible chance that my suggestions is too high and ambiguous that they can’t provide it, or my comments are so harsh that they can’t accept it so I need to be more observant and open minded about those things so that I will not embarrassed my self.

I can say that my role in the Information Environment of my choice is not that hard and challenging unlike those who made and developed it which is more far from my ideas because my role is just a finishing in their services and a client to test it. But without me or any user they can tell that their information environment service fails because recognition can be given for those who gain more comments and suggestions and visited and used by most people who are interested with the environment. And I know they needed me because they know their work is not perfect and there should be problems that they did not notice in making it so they need some observant user to help them out. So I can say that I’m a real BIG part of the Information Environment without me, there will be no Information Environment services. Thank you!! (whew) ^_^ late again!! hehehe

lol! lol! lol!

PostSubject: Essay Writing Contest: Information Environment (hehehe...)   Sun Sep 28, 2008 10:05 pm

My confusion over the exact meaning of information environment caused me to misinterpret the problem. To help myself, I did several repetitions and had a long search Very Happy . Fortunately, I found this article that explains about it.

I suppose that if I were to identify an information environment of my choice, considering that I would be a part of it, as an IT student, I would rather be in the area that would really suit me and that would execute my abilities.

MyndTech, as my chosen company, and as part of its most valued assets, it is my task to provide them the necessary skills. It is of my concern that their business would continue to improve.

Most of MyndTech’s employees are IT professionals and few of their duties that they performed include web development, web and software design. Given that I am also an IT associated, I could easily relate to them and that is an advantage. I may be an amateur, however, I can be an expert; it is a matter of enthusiasm and close attention to detail. We can do anything we set our mind to.

In serving the company, I should be able to develop large number of solutions to its problem. The more ideas I develop, the greater the chance for me to find the usable one. To be fluent in ideas, I have to acquire the habit of letting my imagination work for me. And I should work lot harder.

It was nice to know that my idea coincide with that of the company and that is because they do outsource. And why am I so crazy about outsourcing? Well, because it did quiet amaze me.

I am in favor of outsourcing because I do believe that well-trained outsourcing specialists can provide the company the superior processes and management methods to be one of those efficient, innovative and responsive organizations and enabling them to compete in the global economy. Even the other organizations feel to outsource to help them improve their business.

According to this site: http://faculty.ed.umuc.edu/~meinkej/inss690/gruenberg/outsourcing.htm...
With the innovation and growth of the computer, companies have continued to expand their dependence on IS/IT. The demand for accurate, current, and accessible information has skyrocketed and forced companies to create new innovations to stay ahead of their competition. Companies recognize information systems and information technology are critical strategic assets and understand that they must explore every opportunity to achieve or maintain a competitive advantage. At one time companies had the luxury of dictating the pace of change, however, today, that pace is dictated by customer-driven markets. The internet has totally changed customer expectations regarding convenience, speed, comparability, price and service. The result is that companies must now meet those raised expectations quickly or be pushed aside by the competition. Any company in a competitive market that is not at every customer’s fingertips 24 hours a day is behind the competition and will likely fail to catch up. Through this fierce competition, outsourcers created numerous Web-based companies that are ready to compete in the nonstop internet economy and create innovative technology to become even more responsive to customer needs. E-business and e-ventures are now dominating the business world and business cycles are no longer measured in years or even months, rather they are measured by individual business transactions. If the company missed the initial opportunity, it was now even more important to recruit some help to catch up with the competition.

Innovation can take a company on its way out of business and transform it into one of the top companies in the industry. And the only way to move forward is to create technology that either keeps or leapfrogs the company ahead of its competitors. In today’s fast business pace, most companies cannot simultaneously focus on day-to-day operations and building innovative ideas and products. Success factors are more business oriented and typically address understanding the operation, fitting IS/IT to business needs, managing change projects, and having the right balance of management and technical expertise. Pricing provisions should tie vendor compensation to value received and payments and incentives should be determined by business process performance and results.

To a man, his job should mean everything. It is his stepping stone to giving service others. We should make ourselves an expert in what we are doing.

There are principles of information organization and representation that will serve as my guidelines in performing my role. For sure, that if I am going to follow such principles, it would benefit me, the company, and the clients. These could provide me the focus that I need and that I could have fewer mistakes at work.

To enumerate some of the principles, first of which is that knowledge needs to be organized for communities. Knowledge is one of the valued assets of a company and can be of most competitive advantage. That is why there is importance of knowledge management. Since we are to give service to our clients, they should be treated of great importance. We are working for them to cater their needs thus we should provide them the vital information. Some organizations have acquired sophisticated IT systems to store and retrieve accumulated knowledge.

Next is that, in designing tools to support the organization of knowledge, guiding principle must be that of user orientation and predominant usage. For an instance, in designing a system, it undergoes several measures. Technical specialists would make sure that when they design a system, it should be of scope of the user’s knowledge. User must also be acquainted and system should be of that major use. To do so, structured methodologies have been used to document, analyze, and design system.
Another thing is the standardization and networking that provides infrastructures, which facilitate effective and efficient access to information and documents. Since the company is into an IT business, their Information Technology infrastructure consists of computer hardware, software, data and storage technology, and networks. They do have their databases and so they could easily produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information. Having a document on the system would save those two hours of research.

To all of us there comes a time when we need to put to the test, under the microscope of reality, all that we have learned, all that we have been told, and all that we are. We examine the pieces and, rejecting some, we take what we remains to re-build a new life. More importantly, we gain a new direction of where we are going and why.

We all have a problem but we all have a choice of alternative means by which to move towards an objective. Every man or woman has the right to help him or herself… or in other words, the right to choose. I might encounter many challenges when I get to work into the company that would give me a headache, and could lead me to depression. But it is all up to me if I would accept those or to run away. I would be given a task or project that is kind a hard for me and I would have a hard time doing such or I might end up with nothing. But I had read the statement of Henry Kaiser that did inspire me. To share it with, here is what he said:

“If you can’t go under, go over;
If you can’t go through, go round.
If you can’t go right, go left; if you can’t get an angle, take two plates and make it.
If you haven’t the right material, go get it.
If you can’t find it, make substitutions; if you can’t substitute, improvise; if you can’t improvise, make an innovation; but above all, get the job done!”

The statement gave me an idea on how to solve the problem. I may ask for assistance from my co-worker or from an expert in doing the project. It has been said, “Two minds are better than one”.
I may be having a poor performance at work and that I am not helping the company. This could happen when one assumes a certain kind of role that is none of his/her expertise or knowledge. He/she might end up losing his/her job. This is an interesting issue in which many of the graduate students are having this kind of experience. So the message is clear. We should get to know all about the job that we want and then go on from there and find easier and better ways of accomplishing our task.

When we stop thinking of what we cannot do, and do what we can do we will suddenly be filled with a sense of exaltation and escape from our own little cage of self-pity. The will to do creates success. We learn to do, when we are interested and enthusiastic. Great performance is achieved by a great amount of work, self discipline and a burning desire to succeed. The key that unlocks the way to achievement is desire, and the attitude that nothing but the best will do. The essentials of great performance are written in the awareness of those who search for perfection in creative achievement.

There are some who always say that they fail to meet job requirements because they lack of experience. But to think, experience can be learned. The learning process is filled with trial and error and accomplished by some frustrations; but we learn from our mistakes. As we grow older we select “pace-makers” to admire, respect and imitate and as we grow more like our “pace-makers” we develop resoluteness and confidence. We accept each success as only temporary and then we expand our world to include others, and how we adjust to others has an important bearing on the success we experience in life. Every time we utter a negative thought we are engaged in self-destruction. We must think only that which we wish to experience. We should never sell ourselves short. Never underestimate your abilities. Usually when a man lacks confidence to do a job, it has nothing to do with his abilities or his intelligence. His lack of confidence is based on laziness or the lack of training. Today, training is the easiest thing in the world to get and the extraordinary effort to study is always worth while. The will to do and ability come with the knowledge that you can do.

As we open our eyes and see, we learn that our human experience is not the highest form of experience in the universe. We learn that we are constantly emerging state of “becoming”. We learn that all that we wish to see has been there all the time; it has been waiting for our mind to develop. No one can teach us to develop awareness. The knowledge of awareness to be really of our own must grow out of ourselves. Teachers and others may stimulate our mind but no one can open our eyes, or open our mind, except ourselves. But in the process of becoming what we will become we must encourage this open-eyed freedom to see in ourselves so that we can remove the surface barriers that make so many things appear to be impossible of achievement.

Another problem that would challenge me is the lack of fund. Let me have this situation, say for example, I am a good IT professional, the best in my field. I have this idea to do a project that would contribute to the success of the company. The problem is, the company is lack of capital, but I am determined to proceed with my plan to give the best service possible. To gain capital, I would suggest the company to solicit to the other firms. As it says “Seek and you will find”. The project can be done and I will find a way to do it. Dramatic but it is true! Very Happy

I dreamed of having a work in a big company that is, somehow, related to my course of study, and that I can serve at my best.
In the attainment of my work I must be prepared to give the whole of myself. I must be confident, determined and enthusiastic.

Identify an information environment of your choice and write an essay to address the following questions:

• What should be your role within this environment?
• How can the principles of information organization and representation help you in performing this role?
• What are the challenges facing you in performing the role? How will you address these challenges?

First of all let me define first the meaning of Information Environment.

The information environment is the aggregate of individuals, organizations, and systems
that collect, process, disseminate, or act on information. The actors include leaders, decision makers, individuals, and organizations. Resources include the materials and systems employed to collect, analyze, apply, or disseminate information. The information environment is where humans and automated systems observe, orient, decide, and act upon information, and is therefore the principal environment of decision making. Even though the information environment is considered distinct, it resides within each of the four domains. The information environment is made up of three interrelated dimensions: physical, informational, and cognitive.

Hmmm, while reading this article ("thanks to melgar for this link") I have learned that Information environment is compose of three parts - physical, informational and cognitive. I think my role will be in the informational side of the Information environment since my course will be best suite for it. A Sys DBA is the best role for me in this field.
since the informational dimension states:

The informational dimension is where information is collected, processed, stored, disseminated, displayed, and protected. It is the dimension where the C2 of modern military forces is communicated, and where commander’s intent is conveyed. It consists of the content and flow of information. Consequently, it is the informational dimension that must be protected.

As a system Database Administrator the principles of Information organization will help me to know what are the changes that the company will adopt, what will be the new trend and what are the information that will be restricted or make it as a private data. Information organization principles is badly needed in my part for it will solve the major problems that i think i will encounter in the company. the conclusions are that the IT leader needs to be positioned with other institutional leaders who are making strategic decisions, and that the internal IT structure needs to be a role-based hybrid of centralized and decentralized units

I think the challenges that i will face is more on the securing the confidential datum of the company and maintaining the system of the company since as a database administrator this will be almost the case like updating the system, maintenance and other stuffs.. I think i can address these challenges through accurate planning and choosing the right model so that the communication of every dept will be accurate.. Since i have an idea regarding this matter in our SE like making use cases and other stuffs so that the product will be accurate and according to the plan. It is difficult to maintain a system that is not in accordance to the plan that was proposed because their will be some conflicts that will arise in the middle of the transactions.

PostSubject: Re: Assignment 10 (Due: before September 26, 2008, 13:00hrs)   Wed Oct 15, 2008 8:45 pm

According to the Webster Dictionary, an environment can be defined as the circumstance, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded. This constitutes everything that surrounds you. An environment could be classified as the situation on which you are currently experiencing, if for example you are a witness to a hijacking or kidnapping then that could be defined as the environment were in you are situated: a hijacking environment. Environment could also include the objects that are situated within a certain radius around you. This definition of environment is concerned with the physical surroundings, hence an environment within a forest is very different from the environment in a dessert or in the north pole. Lastly, environment could consist of the conditions you are in. Being in a hot, cold, damp, humid, arid, dark or light place would also define the environment you are situated in.
Information on the other hand can be defined as the communication or the reception of knowledge or intelligence. Others define information as data that has intrinsic value or importance hence it differentiates data from information. Data could be any knowledge that has been gathered but information is data that has been processed and has value.
By combining the two definitions, environment and information, I could safely say that an information environment is a setting in which knowledge or information is being gathered, processed, used, stored, and updated according to the specifications of the one in need of such information.
There are a lot of kinds of information environment. A classic example of an information environment would be the library. Within the walls of a library information is stored, taken care of, used and read depending on the requirement of the person in search of a specific information. Information environments ranges to the very small and simple to the big and complex.
For the purpose of this assignment I would choose to associate myself with a small and simple information environment, the internet caffe or internet shops. Internet shops in their own rights could also be classified as small or big depending on the number of computers inside the shop. There are different styles on how the computers in an internet shop are arranged. Computers for gaming could be grouped as one and computers for surfing could also consist of another group. Computers for surfing could be further grouped into units with web cam and those without. But some internet caffes allow both surfing and gaming on all their units.
Internet shops are venues or environments where in thousands of information or data pass and is processed daily. Internet shops also caters to all ages but some of them impose strict rules for the benefit of the customer such as students are not allowed inside the premises of the shop during school time.
As a student, my part in this information environment is minimal but a very important one. I could influence my fellow students to prioritize their time in using the internet caffes. Other students spend more time inside the internet caffes than inside their classrooms. By being a good role model or by directly confronting them I would be able to influence them to prioritize their academic life. Furthermore, by being an internet user, I would also be able to promote ethical and moral issues within the premises of the shop.
Hacking and cracking are two different things but are usually mistaken as the same. Inside the internet shops, a lot of people practice their hacking and cracking skills in order to improve in them. By being a vigilant patron of the shop I could make the environment a safer place to get information or to store it for that matter without the fear that others would be doing something illegal.
As for the moral issue, internet shops are used by others for pornographic purposes. By being observant i could help people from polluting their own minds.
Furthermore, I observed that internet shops cater to anyone regardless of social status and age. Even the kids on the streets sometimes go inside the internet shop to play, wasting their money instead of buying something better such as food. I have no right to tell this kind of people on where and how to spend their money but it would be a social obligation of mine to educate them on the proper and right way to spend their hard earned money, that is if it was hard earned on the first place. ^_^
By being an Information Technology student, I could also help the patrons of the shop on the proper usage of the equipment within the shop. I could even teach the proprietor of the shop a thing or two. In addition to that I could give suggestions as to how the shop could save more on electricity at the same time doing good to the environment.
By being also vigilant and observant I would also be able to check if the internet shop is in violation of the rights of software companies.
My role inside the shop would be a patron, a teacher, a helper and a censure of the moral and ethical issues that happen within the premises of the internet shop.
My power or influence is not that great so a strategy is needed in able to pull this through. Recruitment is the answer to the problem involved. By recruiting others who would help me on this enterprise and themselves recruiting others in turn, in no time we could make any internet shop a safe, moral and ethical environment where it is conducive for students to study and to spend their spare time in.

It took me so long to write down this article because formulating 2000 words, isn't really that easy. I maybe late, but heck, as they all say its better late than never.

To start of this paper, let me first give you the definition of what an information environment is. The information environment is the aggregate of individuals, organizations, and systems that collect, process, disseminate, or act on information. The information environment is made up of three interrelated dimensions: physical, informational, and cognitive.

Informational properties of the information environment include those systems and networks where information is created, processed, manipulated, transmitted, and shared. It includes those properties relevant to the electronic collection, transmission, processing, storage, and display of information. These properties may be electronic or human-to-human or a combination of both. They describe the formal and informal communications infrastructure and networks, kinship and descent relationships, licit and illicit commercial relationships and social affiliations and contacts that collectively create, process, manipulate, transmit, and share information in an operational area.

Also, it was mentioned that the information environment changes over time according to different factors. Physical changes may occur more slowly and may be easier to detect than informational or cognitive changes. Commanders and their staffs must understand both the timeliness of the intelligence they receive and the differing potentials for change in the dimensions of the information environment. The implication is that we must have agile intellects, intelligence systems, and organizational processes to exploit this dynamic environment.

True, that today due to the fast changing and fast growing level of information systems around the globe, it is now being incorporated into other divisions, sectors or departments where it is seemed to be building an essential role. New industries or information environments swarm the world and the country through its more common faces such as call centers, medical transcription center and many more.

Through my Management Information Systems class, I experienced to be in an information environment. The call center company, CallBox is our adopted enterprise for our Management Information Systems subject.

CallBox is a call center provider focused on reducing operational costs across the spectrum of customer contact services. CallBox primary goal is to deliver savings in inbound and outbound calls services to small and medium sized businesses. Since CallBox uses top notch people and leading technology, CallBox offers those savings without sacrifices in customer service levels or sales.
Callbox is a full service sales and marketing firm that provides outbound and inbound sales solutions, creative marketing support, and database services.

Callbox complements the sales process of businesses, enabling them to accelerate revenue growth and market capture with its global database and cutting-edge service delivery systems. By providing valuable insight on best practices and top notch sales support, Callbox allows businesses to focus on developing their products and services.

Launched in Los Angeles, California, Callbox provides global market access to leading industries such as software and technology services, financial, medical and business services from its offices in the US, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom and the Philippines.

After graduating and be a fully pledged IT professional, it would be practical to first get employed in a company like CallBox, since companies a like it are a rave in the country today. But, I don't want to be just a simple agent, being a team leader or a supervisor would be much preferable. But I only consider those roles as my guiding steps or baby steps to achieve my real goal.

Utilizing all my capabilities and exploring the depth of information society on this digital age is what I want to so . Making the most of the full significance of the high quality information that already exist in the company to make it more grow with the intention that it will suit each individual’s particular needs especially the clients.

So how can the principles of information organization and representation help me in performing this role? There are three principles of knowledge organization that I have known of. First is that, knowledge needs to be organized for communities. Second is that, in designing tools to support the organization of knowledge, guiding principle must be that of user orientation and predominant usage. And lastly, standardization and networking provide infrastructures, which facilitate effective and efficient access to information and documents.

But I believe that such difficulties can be overcome by time and with continued studying and practice of the craft. Gain as many experience and knowledge as you can for life is a never ending journey to learn. Remember that being in an IT environment, one should have the proper discipline to be a useful and worthy member of this community.

OMG I’m late, so late. And I don’t even know where to start Very Happy . I should start with a definition I guess.

What is an Information Environment? Uhhmm.. Just a minute I’m still “googling” it. Ahhh there it is. An Information Environment is an area where group of IT professionals or any just anybody who has the skill to create and maintain a set of network or online services that supports the publishing and use of information and learning resources. In short it is where knowledge or information is being gathered, processed, used, stored, and updated according to what the user(s) are looking for. Since most of these environments are independent, users such as myself has to navigate through websites or series of sites in order to find the information needed for like, say for a research or for reference material or even just for knowledge’s sake. Yes, I “google” for information a lot just to satisfy my curious mind. I usually search for information mostly regarding on questions of “How” and “Why”. For example ‘How come cats always land on their feet?’, ‘How did the Mayan and Aztec Empire (which is by the way two of the most powerful empires of the old world) got wiped out?’ and ‘Why did Führer Adolf Hitler wage war on their neighboring countries?’. These pieces of information are like gold coins in a treasure chest, small yet invaluable. But these treasure chests aren’t found in a single search, neither can it be taken in a single voyage without any crew.

Okay, so much for metaphors. What I want to say is that knowledge is priceless and cannot be learned all at once without anyone’s help. That is why books are published, libraries are constructed, and schools and universities have been erected. Speaking of libraries, I think I just came up with an example of an information environment, hooray!

Library, a place where knowledge sits in a shelf, a place where we can study or just read without being disturbed, and a good place to sleep too (joke lang!). It is where people usually go whenever their craving for knowledge hit them or students whenever they’re cramming for their research papers. But finding the right information usually takes time, really takes time. That’s why books are cataloged to make the searching less hard. Back in the days where computers were not easily accessed by normal people (hehe), libraries were the best place to be. Back then libraries only have photocopiers and typewriters which are available for readers to use. So whenever a needed information is found it is either copied by hand, get it photocopied, or have it typewritten (haven’t tried this one though Very Happy). Therefore the transition or flow of knowledge is rather slow, which inhibits the acquisition of knowledge. Now here comes the bloom of information age, Internet became the best source of information and combined with the principles of sharing knowledge and information, search engines were improved and billions of information became online, thus the creation of digital libraries.

The rise of digital libraries marks the new age of information dissemination. Not only does it abide to the principle of knowledge sharing, it also makes it easier for users to access to the information needed through search engines. Since all information found in digital libraries are searched through search engines I’d pick search engine sites to be my information environment, specifically an information-dedicated search engine. And a search engine head developer/programmer will be my role.

Information are like grains of sand in Boracay Laughing, it is just lying still in the open. But finding the right grain of sand will take a lifetime. That’s why searching tools or search engines are very important if not, a necessity. That’s why as a search engine developer I should make the searching algorithm more complex to make the search output more accurate. If possible I would add to the word-based search engine a logic-based searching method. That is, when a user is searching with keywords the engine will simulate the logic or sense of these keywords and provide a set of possible meaning of the whole inputted phrase, basically making it artificially intelligent. It really seems not possible, for now, but time will come, it will. Then I would make the user interface more appealing, not with added visual effects or embedded applications but with just a simple relaxing theme that would not strain the eyes of any users, yet beautiful enough to appreciated. Since knowledge should be free of cost there should only be small amount advertisements on the search engine. Ads redirect the attention of the users especially when the advertised product or service is quite enticing (e.g. pornsites, free download, etc.). Some ads really annoys me, like the ones that keep on flashing, and ones that moves with the scroll bar, and also there are ads that pops-up in the center of the web explorer and doesn’t even had and exit button on it. In line with the digital libraries’ advocacy of free knowledge the search engine site should have direct links to certified accurate-information digital libraries placed on the web page.

Creating this complex search engine will really take time and lots of effort, not to mention the maintenance of it afterwards. But for a team dedicated in helping people to acquire knowledge and information, knowing that they’ve learn something means our efforts have paid off.

*Disclaimer: This article does not imply that going to libraries and reading reference books makes the learning process slow. Reading tangible materials is still the best way of reading, trust me. Nothing beats the smell of an old book.
